The power pole removal should not have taken place if it was not already packaged with a funded stadium expansion.  That's how you do things - you tie them together financially - so you do not waste $4.5 million.

Starlight Stadium has issues with flow

As someone who regularly attends events at Starlight Stadium, I was once again appalled at the lack of pedestrian and vehicle controls Wednesday night at the Tigres vs. Whitecaps Champions Cup match.

At the west gate, there was no staff assisting with crowd management, resulting in long lines and confusion as people spilled onto the busy Langford Parkway and mixed with traffic in overflowing parking lots.

Post-game, the disorder intensified. People were funneled through chokepoint exits that ejected onto the road along a sidewalk-free Langford Parkway.

Pedestrians were forced to walk on the roads or navigate a parking lot filled with stressed drivers, and we witnessed a near collision between a pedestrian and a semi-trailer truck at a roundabout.

The absence of public transportation to and from Starlight only exacerbates the situation and increases the number of vehicles needed to get fans to and from the stadium.

While Langford and the various sports partners deserve much praise for creating a beautiful and intimate stadium, the infrastructure around the stadium fails to accommodate even modest crowds of 5,000.

If plans to expand to 10,000 seats are someday realized, then there needs to be serious infrastructure improvements made.

Better sidewalks, public transportation options, and adequate personnel to manage pedestrian and vehicle flows before and after events are essential.

Without changes it is just a matter of time before a pedestrian tragedy occurs.

Langford was sold a basket of fake goods with promises of the railway connecting the stadium with downtown Victoria.

They did all they could to promote the viability of a line but the train never returned. So now they have no choice but to figure out an alternative way to get people to that stadium.

5,000 people would need 68 trains, that was never going to work either.

I don’t think that’s quite right.

SkyTrain’s smallest trains have a full passenger capacity of 400. 350 will fit comfortably, standing room.

That’s a lot of people.

The trick is to have a pre-game event for staggered arrivals. On the return you obviously want to have a few trains ready right away, like SkyTrain does.

Anyhow, it’s all pie in the sky. Langford eventually realized there would be no train.

Sidings, my man.

We don’t need to twin the whole thing, we can do lots with strategic sidings.

That doesn’t work efficiently. A train stopped on a siding for 5 minutes is a train 5 more minutes away from being put back into service in the demand direction.

The good thing is, we can time the trains pretty good with modern technology. Station arrivals and departures can be synced so easily.

We’re not dealing with the movement of 250,000 people, luckily.

I'm glad Langford didn't waste another million on train crossing arms and lights like they were told that they had to.

I agree that the stadium needs improved access and egress and off site parking with shuttle buses.

There is a sidewalk on the parkway, but it is on the opposite side of the road.

Previous Langford council would already have the extra seating built.

An average of 3,241 people attended Pacific FC games in 2023.

Langford said council is including $50,000 in its 2024 capital budget for design renderings and cost estimates to add at least 2,000 more seats on the north side of the stadium.

At the same time, the city said council has authorized staff to prepare for a referendum to secure the funding required for the stadium expansion through long-term borrowing. A date was not provided for the vote.

CHEK News reported last week that the city received three proposals to expand the stadium in 2022, with costs ranging from $10.4 million to $14.6 million.

But not do anything about extra sidewalks? Transpo?  Sounds like it can't handle the crowd as it is.  I still doubt it's even 5,000...

Who told them there was going to be a train? Seems to me like everyone except the ICF has been saying no train for a decade.
