Oak Bay is the homicide and violent crime capital on Vancouver Island, by your logic. The data is clear. You’re more likely to be murdered or viciously assaulted in Oak Bay, than anywhere else on Vancouver Island, perhaps even in all of BC.
Data never paints the whole picture. You need inference and wisdom to interpret its meaning, and that’s provided the data is correct, representative and unbiased.
Mike, you said gun violence rate, not where the most gun crime and deaths occur. It wasn't about where is more likely. Don't use words unless you back them up please. When you say rate, that's what I think you are saying. Not where you think it's more dangerous for you to walk in the most dangerous part of town yelling "I hate gangs and I'm carrying $10,000 in cash." Yeah in Oakland you are more likely to draw attention that in small town Arkansas. As for violence with guns however, many small towns and less populace states with not gun control have more gun violence per population than more populace cities with harsher gun control. Is there more gun violence in certain parts of certain cities? Sure, you got me. But there are many spots in those cities I would feel safer than in some smaller towns also.

See our northern communities for suicide stats.
That doesn’t make them dangerous places to be.
Data can lead you astray, and to come to really wild, nonsensical conclusions like it’s more dangerous to be in a rural small town, than Chicago, because of gun violence.
You need to apply some common sense, which is lacking in a lot of these fact checking websites that take data literally and then demand you also view it within strict guidelines to where in the absence of additional data, you have no choice but to conclude that you’re more likely to get shot by a criminal in rural Arkansas, than in Chicago.
It’s an absurd argument to make.

Then VicPD started releasing press releases describing the chaos on our streets? Then the media was upset that VicPD was issuing too many crime releases? Remember the Black Press articles unabashedly stating Victoria’s crime problem was just in our heads? I do. I’ll never forget that manipulation and coercion.

Your own data says the stats include suicides, right? Rural places with less opportunity breed bad thoughts and mental health challenges.

Yes I noted that... What it boils down to however which you like to gloss over is gun control laws and number of guns owned... You have to understand more guns pretty much equates more violence with guns.
Gun Violence by State 2024 (worldpopulationreview.com)
Gun Violence by State
Based on the number of gun deaths per capita in 2021 alone, states with the most gun violence are:
- Mississippi: 33.9
- Louisiana: 29.1
- New Mexico: 27.8
- Alabama: 26.4
- Wyoming: 26.1
- Alaska: 25.2
- Montana: 25.1
- Arkansas: 23.3
- Missouri: 23.2
- Tennessee: 22.8
These states tend to have high gun ownership rates. Montana has the highest with 66.3%, followed by Wyoming with 66.2%, and Alaska with 64.5%.
In comparison, states with low gun violence per capita like Massachusetts (3.4), Hawaii (4.8), New Jersey (5.2), and New York (5.4) have lower rates of gun ownership and stricter gun regulations.

Switzerland has a ton of guns.
It’s not the guns. It’s the society. And that takes us right back to mass media glamorizing guns. Video games. Music. Your kids are being marketed to all day via those platforms. It’s not just clothes and stuff that’s being marketed, it’s an entire culture. It’s at the core of everything.

They have both... But in the US they don't and you can clearly see that the more guns and less restrictions lead to more violence.. Sure society plays a role, but they have that blood thirsty society too. Easier to change the guns. And that'll make it easier for the government to take over too... MMWWWUUUHAHAHAHA

The majority of gun violence is in gun controlled states and
/or cities. The highest volume of gun-related homicides is in gun-controlled Chicago.
Like it is in gun controlled Toronto.
Cities are where the gun crime happens. Big cities have lower overall per-capita rates than smaller cities (ie Oak Bay vs. Surrey) but smaller cities can have their stats skewed by a very small group of trouble makers. It’s much harder to skew numbers in a large city.

Mike is right. They don’t have media or video games or music in Switzerland. Thats why they don’t have gun violence or mass shooting problems.

Change the culture, and you’ll change the outcomes. It’s that simple.
But I digress. You live in a city, where police have been forced out of schools, and gang members welcomed. Your priorities are not aligned with common sense, and organized crime thanks you every single day.

This is why the problem is unsolvable. Because of willing conduits like yourself, who would rather pretend reality staring them in the face isn’t real, and chase the dream of stricter government controls that do not work.

You always gotta add some non-sequitur comment in there as a little snipe. No guns means way less gun violence. If the society can't figure out not to shoot anyone then you lose the guns. If guys want there guns for hunting etc, move to Canada, Finland or Switzerland where society understand better. This is common sense Mike, not just continue doing the same thing which is making things worse.

Have you not noticed all of the shootings on the Lower Mainland in recent days, including the use of an Illegal fully automatic rifle in a mass shooting in White Rock? We also had a drive-by on the Island.
Like, hello? Is the cognitive dissonance just that bad?
We need to confront the culture in Canada as well, because it is directly exposed to US culture that heavily, ridiculously so, promotes violence, gun crimes, and criminality.
America has always had guns. So what happened in the last 30 years that saw gun crimes skyrocket? Whatever could it be. The classical music? The country rock? Homeward Bound? 101 Dalmatians?
You and m3m say -nothing- happened. Well I can tell you gun control ramped up. And so did a destructive, violence-seeking element to our culture.
Hey, you guys make your own bed. Sleep in it and tell us how it’s working for you. I know where I would never send my kid to school, and that’s a classroom in SD61 that views police as the problem.
Good luck with that.

Well I think there are many factors. Those factors happen in every country. Video games and rap music do not know borders. What else you got? Let's focus on the mass shootings in the US that started this, don't tangent to schools in Victoria. Find some data to back up that more and more semi-auto weapons is not a factor. It's out there.

They don’t even have Amazon! They also have compulsory military service for men, where they are all taught safe firearm handling.

The other countries do not celebrate gang culture like the US does. It admires it and pushes it. Look at the teen music scene. It’s littered with the corpses of shot-dead musicians, whose music was about un-aliving people. What a crazy coincidence. I wonder why that would be…Well I think there are many factors. You have to be so naive to believe mass media promoting violence in music, games and film is of no consequence when it -directly- correlates with the rise in gun violence in the country that creates, promotes and distributes it.

Again that is not true for gun violence rate... Yes most gun violence is in big cities in terms of numbers, that is true. We've gone over that, but you say rate and you are wrong. Your last statement in conjecture but could be true for the most part..
The other countries do not celebrate gang culture like the US does. It admires it and pushes it. Look at the teen music scene. It’s littered with the corpses of shot-dead musicians, whose music was about un-aliving people. What a crazy coincidence. I wonder why that would be…

True, gun policies stop more proliferation of guns and thus less gang led violence. Sling shots aren't very tough looking. Stop saying Europe doesn't see US culture... That is naive.
Again I didn't say that everything doesn't play a part but you thinking if there were no guns that the violence would be the same isn't very astute.
