...Victoria seems to be hanging on to a belief that the Feds will bail them out...

Laurel will have a lot of convincing to do in Parliament.

The point was made on CFAX today that both Nanaimo and Vancouver have ex-MLAs as Mayors and they are cutting very quickly. They must think that with the Province in the hole $12B+ and the Feds $300B+ there is no free money coming to cities that can't even make the minimalist of efforts to try and balance their own books.

I am sure Helps doesn't care. By the time she is forced to pass the tax increases on to residents she will have left office and the pile of steaming poop will be someone else's problem to deal with.

To cover the $17M, taxes would need to be increased by 15% plus whatever shortfall is anticipated next year!

So we should expect some aggressive pro-development initiatives shortly? You know, to help address the issue?

If we don’t see a blog post from the mayor by the end of tonight, it’ll mark the longest period of time the mayor has not updated her blog in a few months, going back to at least March.

Her 12 PR staff must be on vacation.

In hiding? I think Ben is also taking one of his periodic breaks from twitter.

It's official, the mayor has been silent on her blog for the longest period since March 01, where the subsequent post was published on March 14th, the infamous "let's eat out" post that caught a lot of people off guard as the public began to socially isolate out of a concern for a spreading COVID.

Last week City Hall was shot up by a yet unidentified individual, after a week of serious incidents that escalated as far as parks crews requiring security to do their jobs at Beacon Hill Park. During that time the mayor also stopped utilizing her Twitter account, and it has remained offline since.

From her description of leadership on the community drop in web page:

« the leader is held to three tasks: to shift the context in which people gather, to name the debate through powerful questions, and to listen rather than advocate, defend or provide answers.” This is the spirit in which I’m piloting a new format of the mayor’s regular time with the public.«

Sorry, but am I the only one who feels this adds insult to injury??
You can’t virtue signal when you have more than 5 years doing exactly the opposite!!! Grrrr

Her Worseship has mastered one third of this.

While living with our current leadership might cause many to need counselling, I would hope that our current leadership does not see themselves playing that role and ultimately it is absolutely up to those at that table to construct an answer, see how it works or doesn't, and revise accordingly.  The answer they have provided is inadequate - its failing, and people are demanding better, so now is the time to go back to the drawing board and improve upon the solution.

The TC editorial about the mayor's twitter exit is pretty hilarious. You don't ever expect much from the TC, but they really went to town with this one. Like, uh, get a room!

yes. it was bad.

like as if helps was a special case of social media attacks. you have to learn to live with it.

when she puts out a tweet and 400 people see it and 15 comment negatively it’s not the end of the world.

I believe it was eight individuals who commented negatively, according to Stirling who tracked down the messages. Was it actually 15?

Seems odd to shut down a major communication channel over something so mundane. Just tune it out. Or was the issue that the mayor could no longer control the narrative, and it was better to kill the account than to have criticisms linger?

Why is the Times Colonist so reluctant to call out the behaviour/actions of Victoria's mayor and council? Is the CoV the only source of advertising revenue for the paper?

But that would defeat the purpose of having a big drama to make her the victim. Her strategy is simple: disrespect her constituents at every opportunity and then complain when they get upset.
