I have a friend who is a retired IRSU member. He says his stops were about education, and to chat with the person about their choices. He didn't reach for the ticket book unless the person was rude or had engaged in very dangerous driving. Some things get automatic tickets like no seatbelt, texting, excessive speed, etc.

Maybe he's the exception to the rule but every cop friend of mine from various local depts call them zealots and tax collectors. I dare you to do an FOI on them to ask if they run any data to show how their work improves safety in known incident black spots. I also dare you to FOI and ask for the % of tickets written broken down by speed, tailgating, failure to signal, distracted etc.

I have a lot of respect for police and the hard unforgiving work they do. Not so with IRSU zealots picking low hanging fruit.

We also see the low hanging fruit, right? Speed traps, cellphone traps, seatbelt checks, etc.

What we don't see are the stops that happen in between the more visible exercises.

Now look, I'm not making excuses for cops and picking on bad drivers (ok, hold on, maybe I am picking on bad drivers). I just want something done about the poor infrastructure situation in the CRD where one little mess-up snarls the city. The Malahat is notorious, and it's not because of bad road design, but because people feel impervious knowing that there's a change in policing oversight along that highway and knowing where cops usually hide out when conducting speed traps. Whatever the solution to this problem is, it's time we invest in it.

And just like that, two separate collisions are snarling traffic in the north and southbound lanes of the Pat Bay right now. One collision is at Tanner, both southbound lanes closed. The other collision is south of Sayward, affecting northbound traffic.

Airport and ferry terminal blocked unless you detour via the one wagon trail.

Who’s in a hurry to get to ferries? I’ll be ultra surprised if they run another today. Even one with those arches.

But at least there are alternatives such as West Saanich and Welch Rd

Yes, by total fluke. And for there to be no alternative along the Malahat is bonkers crazy.

What’s even crazier is the NDP wanted to run a Malahat detour route via Sooke! Down winding, unlit, precarious logging roads outside of cell services and with no civilization for 30km, at all, only to have motorists end up in rural Sooke, then have to trek 25km from Sooke along Otter Point Road, to Sooke Road, then on to Langford.

Highway 1 needs to be upgraded to a full-on limited-access freeway from Tillicum Rd to Nanaimo.  This includes a Duncan bypass.

The Pat Bay needs the same, from Saanich Muni Hall to the ferry dock.

Speed might cause some accidents, but far more - and tons of near-misses - are caused by uncontrolled access points, left turns, and damn traffic lights bunching traffic together where it would otherwise spread itself out.

Sooke Road backed up for miles from the town centre to Kangaroo Road due to a single vehicle flying off the road into a ditch.

20,000 people blocked in.

Cops will tell you speed is an ingredient in most high profile crashes. There are the obvious ones of people pulling in in front of you, but due to speeding, the driver wasn’t able to avoid the crash. Officially the blame is still on the motorist who pulled out, though.

This morning’s Sooke Road crash was more than likely speeding (losing control, ending up in a ditch). The horrific accident that killed a child on that highway in September certainly was. The vehicle was travelling at ridiculous speed.

And the death from earlier this month on Highway 14 was speeding too. Vehicle left its lane and collided with an oncoming pick-up, killing the driver who lost control. You think that sort of thing happens at 80km/h on a four lane highway? Not a chance, the guy lost control around a corner and killed himself, and badly injured the other motorist.

that's a great idea.  and how to pay for it?  with development fees at vancouver island's first brand new city of tomorrow.

Welcome. To Sunshine, British Columbia.

Ministry update says Highway 1 #malahat will remain closed due to retaining wall washout and longitudinal crack appearing along the median at the Tunnel Hill section. malahatdrive.ca

The longitudinal crack could be serious. Nobody wants a hunk of road to fall down the mountainside.

This is why, nowhere else in the developed world, is a goat trail used as a major highway for a population of a half million people.

Now the circle route has closed.
