Vancouver airport on alert for deadly virus from China

Travellers from Wuhan, China, who arrive at Vancouver airport will be told to report flu-like symptoms and could face additional screening after a deadly respiratory virus that originated in the city killed two people and infected another 45 overseas.

The Public Health Agency of Canada said that Canadians are at low risk of infection, given that Canada has no direct flights from Wuhan and few travellers arrive here directly from the city. But the agency said Friday that it will work to identify any travellers who might have been exposed.  https://www.timescol...hina-1.24055743

This is scary; bound to happen sooner or later. Let's hope it's short lived compared to SARS.

If it's less deadly than SARS it'll probably spread way faster.

"......A Citibank report this morning notes that the coronavirus currently sweeping China and Asia could reach a full-blown crisis by March, before it can be contained."

"...Air Canada stock has already reacted badly to the crisis, falling 4.5 per cent."

".....If this virus is as bad as “black swan” events, the Canadian airline could take a $475 million hit to Ebitda, suggesting a$7 per share hit to its stock value or a 14% decline from its Monday’s closing price, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce analyst Kevin Chiang in a report published Tuesday. “That being said, it is unknown at this time if the coronavirus will be as bad as the SARS outbreak from 2003,” Chiang said, according to a Bloomberg report."

‘This time I’m scared’:

SARS virologist warns Wuhan virus far worse, as China locks down second city

“Conservative estimates suggest that the scale of infection may eventually be 10 times higher than SARS,” said Dr. Guan, director of the State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases at the University of Hong Kong, told China’s Caixin media group on Thursday."

Dammit my portfolio was up 12% last year - this ain't going to help: https://www.cnn.com/...oday/index.html.

Interesting to hear Canadian lawyers - good old lawyers, there is no subject under the sun that they can't find without a potential for litigious action - chime in and blather on this week about how a China-style quarantine of a major Canadian city a la Wuhan was "impossible" here due to Charter provisions governing freedom of movement...huh??! So if a deadly virus broke out in one of our major cities - lets call it Justinian Trudoitis or its close relative Benjamin Isittis - the government essentially is powerless to do anything because of 'individual freedoms?' I find that very difficult to believe...

Google the war Powers act. Also there's always the much maligned not withstanding clause, which establishes parliament as the supreme branch of government.

^ If you are referring to the War Measures Act, it was actually repealed in 1988 and replaced by the Emergencies Act. Does the latter cover off this contingency? What I do know of the Emergencies Act is that any temporary laws made under the Act are nonetheless subject to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms - which was the point presumably the lawyers were making. Hopefully we won't have to find out the hard way.
