I’m not sure what the balance was. But they did lots of good.

Their stated intent was to socially engineer the natives into a different culture than their own. Against their will. This is in the legislation and documented statements and speeches.

My dad went to catholic school without that element and it sounded like a nightmare. He was beaten a lot. I doubt they had much good about them. If they did, we might not be here in this situation.

I don't agree with either of your opinions and will debate you with pleasure. But I will also fight against making your opinion criminal more than anything else.

Note.... Around the time that was being done, The Americans were simply mass murdering them. So if we compare it to that then yes, they did some good.

Most newcomers to this country do not live on reserves, but most would consider them to immediately have a higher standard of living than most on reserves today. Maybe more assimilation would have been good for all sides.

Now, most indegenous live off reserve today. Maybe a portion of them agree.

^ What gets me are those who live off reserve, have disdain for those who live on-reserve yet are quick to collect any benefit they can.

Perhaps it shouldn't matter whether you live or don't live on a reserve, when it comes to benefits. If you are entitled to something, it's only fair it is provided to you.

I don't know anybody personally, First Nations or Late Period Settlers like ourselves, who would refuse any cheque handed to them from any level of government!

When churches burn across Canada, do they make a sound? The answer, sadly, seems to be no.

It began near the town of Penticton, British Columbia, in the early morning of June 21.

Sacred Heart Mission and St. Gregory Mission, both located on Indian tribal lands, burnt completely to the ground.

A week later, two more churches came down, St. Ann and Our Lady of Lourdes, both in Lower Similkameen, BC. Sgt. Jason Bayda of the RCMP said at the time that fires at “four churches, all Catholic, all on indigenous land … is extremely suspicious.”

Like a fire itself, the wave of church arsons spread across Canada’s westernmost province of British Columbia to its easternmost province of Newfoundland, touching all three northern territories.

Non-Catholic churches are burning as well; in total nearly 120 churches in Canada have been vandalized, set ablaze, or burned to the ground, with a married couple living above one of them dying as a result. Yet, as of January 2024, only 12 people had been charged in relation to these — and just one person had been convicted.

I’m sure the non-reaction would be the same if it was mosques being burned!

My parents were both beaten in regular school.  It was legal to use the strap in Alberta 20 years ago.  In many US states it is perfectly legal today to beat children.  What's your point?

My parents turned out just fine.  I see nothing wrong with a teacher giving a whack to a kid when they are out of control sometimes

Maybe if we were teaching kids there are rules to society like study, get a good job, there would be less issues like the open sewer we call downtown

I don’t really like your vision of what is ok and what the solution is to our social ailments. 🤷🏽

I don’t disagree with the principle, however that only worked in a high trust society where the overwhelming majority of people share the same values. Eg hard work, accountability, honesty, genuine caring for people, etc.

If you reinstituted this policy now you’d have teachers beating students if the kid said there’s only 2 genders…

The husband of a teacher called in to CFAX today, so say teachers are too busy teaching to be indoctrinating kids with ideology.

Thoughts?
