Mad River, Eel River, Big River, Albion River, Navarro River, Gualala River, Russian River, Napa River, Sacramento River, American River.

All of the above are California rivers that flow 365 days a year, and empty directly into the Pacific Ocean.

California has more rivers flowing into the Pacific than Oregon does.

California doesn't have a "fresh water problem", it has a "reservoir problem".

The State/Country needs to redirect the fresh water it already wastes before it contemplates any sort of trillion dollar redirection of the Columbia River.

As for fire fighting in large cities like Los Angeles, you can fight a fire with salt water just as easily as you can with fresh water, all the water bombers are doing it right now. There's an abundance of salt water about 5 feet from the Pallisades Fire's western edge.

Is trying to protect a region of 12 million people (one constructed on the edge of a desert) from wild fire with fresh drinking water being distributed in a fresh drinking water system an effective plan? - when the Pacific Ocean is literally at your doorstep?

Wouldn’t the salt cause issues, though? I honestly don’t know.

Apparently. But not as much as fire, I’d guess.

They will likely never figure out who to blame here.

Whatever the case, it sounds like California governors knew of the risks, and firefighters were concerned this very scenario would occur.

Still, the politicians did their thing and left common sense behind.

There has to be a better way. I still submit that some type of automated fire vehicle makes sense. It can autonomously (or by remote control) drive up and down streets 24/7.

I wondered that too, but with hundreds of thousands of gallons of salt water currently being dumped on LA County land, I'm guessing that, as VW noted above, the salt water is considered less damaging than losing thousands of homes.

It's probably less desirable overall than fresh water would be, but realistically salt water has just got a few additional minerals in it compared to fresh water, combined with the endless supply less than a few feet from billions of dollars worth of now destroyed Malibu homes.

Watching some of the non-mainstream press videos, which tend to get right into the middle of the action, it actually appears that much of the damage was simply unavoidable due to a lack of manpower required to address the scope and speed of what was occurring, driven by those 100+mph Santa Ana Winds.

At its height, the scene appeared to be an almost Dresden level of firestorm.

I mentioned earlier that Carolla has never seen such winds, in his 60 years.

Are the winds partially associated to the fires themselves?

The winds not only spread the fires but they make using aircraft very challenging. Kids are just outside the evacuation zone so we are getting hourly reports. Things could get bad fast in the next couple of days.

Salt water will kill any living vegetation and make the soil non-agrarian for some time.

I think in the rebuilding phase they should mandate all houses have metal or tile roofs with external water systems to protect the properties from flying embers.

No amount of money would have provided enough firefighters or fire trucks to fight these fires, what would have helped is spending the money to clean out the underbrush etc. beforehand.

Fire hydrants could be on a separate water system from the domestic supply using reclaimed or in this case salt water. It will corrode the equipment faster though if it is not flushed properly after.

The Santa Ana winds are caused by a high pressure system to the north and a low pressure system to the south squeezing together. Once the fires are going however they can create their own winds.

Dresden in Los Angeles and our Confederacy of Dunces

LA is burning.

And the derelict people responsible are worried that they are found out as charlatans and empty suits. The leftwing voters who enabled them are getting angry over the inferno that their chosen politicos green-lighted—as if they are shocked, shocked by the consequences of their voting. The dam buster Nero Newsom made his accustomed fiddling appearance and then split—when the media began pointing out that he prohibits new reservoirs, sends precious water out to sea, blows up dams, prevents precautionary gleaning of forests and chaparrals, and then usually blames “Climate change” or “Trump” when called to account.

Poor Karen Bass was DEI-ing in Uganda after being previously warned that lack of rain, record winds, and kindling-like hillsides put her city in existential danger: Out of sight, out of mind. Or did she junket across the world to consult about fire prevention with Ghana’s new president? Was slashing nearly $18 million from the $50 billion city budget, after bragging about creating “451 new positions” in various woke/DEI fields, a way to prevent 25-square miles of Dresden-like desolation?

The embattled Fire Chief Kristen Crowley for two years has bragged not of response time, not of preventive strategies to stop fires, not of slashed budgets and water shortages, but instead about her DEI credentials as the “first” (fill in the blanks) LGBTQ etc. woman, who has hired “70 percent” of her force as either nonwhite, or nonmale, or nonbinary, or non-old fashioned, tough-guy firefighters. The LA utility head? Usually AWOL. The permanent director of LA infrastructure is usually quickly fired or resigns for incompetence, bribery, or malfeasance.

During the discussion, Trump and Bass spoke over each other and briefly clashed over the projected timelines of when evacuated residents should be allowed to return to their properties.

"We are going to do everything we can, slashing regulations, expediting everything so that people can begin the process right away," Bass said during the meeting.

As Bass was speaking, Trump interjected, mentioning that some of the displaced residents were told that they may have to wait up to 18 months to start the rebuild.

"We know the one thing is they are saying they will not be allowed to start for 18 months," Trump said of the 18-month timeframe.

"That will not be the case," Bass responded. "First, we have to take care, to make sure that there's not that getting rid of the hazardous waste, cleaning things up, so that people can start right away. And just like you said, if somebody had their house destroyed and they're going to rebuild essentially the same, maybe a little bit longer, a little bit higher, they really shouldn't have to go through much of a process.

So I want you to know that we are expediting that. We absolutely need your help. We need the federal help."

Trump then pressed the LA mayor on the apparent timing of when the displaced residents can legally return to their properties, saying even a week is too long to make the evacuees wait.

"They want to start now. They want to start removing things and are not allowed to do it now," Trump said.

In that brief exchange, the two did not end up finding a middle ground on when Pacific Palisades residents can formally start the rebuild. In Friday's meeting, Trump said he is going to waive all the federal permits needed to start the rebuild.
