The only way we will get affordable housing on the South Island is to have the government build "projects, council flats." Find some underused property and build hundreds of apartments, then provide good bus service into town. Oh, and have some rules about behaviour permitted in order to maintain tenancy.

Life's a journey......so roll down the window and enjoy the breeze.

Anyhoo, Oak Bay is going to have to grow its housing stock now.

Any bets on where we’ll see the first 50-unit project?

Know it all.

A reasonable place might be up their side of Foul Bay north of Fort.

Also, analyze some of their existing apartment blocks especially near Windsor Park and see if additional blocks can be built in parking lots and/or adjacent lots.

Even if this is specifically what Oak Bay residents have voted against. Democracy is dying a painful death in BC and Canada.

This would be a sweet spot for a set of eight towers, ranging from 16 to 38 floors:

It'd be our own little Manhattan by the park and marina.

Those neon-coloured exteriors, opaque roofs and curved corners have convinced me this is the future of Oak Bay

It's not going to be easy for any future BC government to be worse than the NDP.

The Housing Ministry said in a statement the order-in-council includes 47 municipalities in “areas of the province with the greatest housing need and highest projected growth where targets may be set.”

“These municipalities were simply included in the order-in-council for expediency to not have to amend the regulation every time a new cohort is selected,” a ministry spokesperson said by email Sunday. “While these are areas with the highest need and projected growth, it is not a guarantee that targets will be set in each of those municipalities.”

The housing targets will be set later this summer and municipalities will have six months to show progress. Municipalities were selected using a weighted index based on factors that include urgency of housing need, projected population growth, land availability and housing affordability.

Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon said during last week’s announcement that 10 more municipalities will be selected and notified later this year. It’s unclear which of the municipalities on the order-in-council will be next.

Tom Davidoff, executive director of UBC Sauder School of Business’s Centre for Urban Economics and Real Estate who helped develop the metrics used to select the municipalities, said he was surprised to see Whistler not included on the list given the complaints among seasonal workers and those in the hospitality industry that it’s near impossible to find housing.

And no one questions this new style of governance. “Order in council” isn’t a law. It’s a decree. Check whose signature is required to approve such a decree. Why even vote for a useless MP if they don’t even get a say in government?

Yeah, that makes more sense. I wouldn’t imagine the province would target places that are already providing more housing per capita than Langford, like View Royal and Esquimalt.
