What am I supposed to do about this:
Cheer the development of "diverse housing options"?
Jeer the loss of “affordable” housing?
Shrug my shoulders as missing-middle is “illegal” and nothing will change?

No blanket reform required on the West Shore to build missing middle housing.
Victoria-based Formwell Homes is focusing its efforts on delivering townhomes to suburban Victoria, where they plan to build their largest projects to-date.

1,500-units of rental housing - guaranteed. Council wasted time, and ended up not being able to vote on the project. Now it faces an unknown future.
MMHI, by the City's own admittance a policy unlikely to deliver much housing, took up four months of political time in the last months of council's term, and ended up punting both initiatives to an unknown fate. Both initiatives, ironically, stem from 2019.
Congratulations, Housing Twitter. A job well done.

The Ford government will introduce housing legislation the day after Ontario's municipal election, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing said Friday.
The confirmation comes after The Toronto Star reported Thursday the Ford government plans to "override" municipal zoning laws to allow more "middle missing" housing to be built across Ontario. The changes, the Star reports citing officials, will not permit housing development on the Greenbelt.

Premier Doug Ford has legislation planned that would allow his government to override municipal zoning bylaws in order to create more housing across the province, according to a draft Powerpoint acquired by the Toronto Star.
The Star says the confidential cabinet document they obtained shows that the Progressive Conservatives want to remove restrictions and zoning laws that favour single-family homes over “missing middle” housing — such as duplexes and triplexes — and is not too different than what soon-to-be Premier of British Columbia David Eby has previously suggested for BC.

As first announced by the Star on Thursday, Clark’s bill will override local municipal zoning to allow duplex and triplex housing across Ontario, increasing density in neighborhoods that favor single-family homes.
The government is changing the building code to allow this such units in existing homes as long as the same square footage is maintained.

So this is nowhere as sweeping as the Victoria plan is/was. Here we have triplexes but no increases in FSR. No fourplexes, no sixplexes, no extra height or site coverage/footprint.

Doug Ford may soon be revealing plans to steamroll the zoning powers of Ontario municipalities. The legislation would effectively squash the ability of the province’s city halls to enforce single-family zoning bylaws; henceforth, any Ontarian would be able to build a duplex or triplex without special approval. Given that similar legislation is also being discussed in B.C., this may well be a preview of coming attractions in Canadian housing policy.

This is all skirting around the issue that as many communities languish, we keep packing in more and more people into cities that are grappling with growth and stressing their services to their respective limits.
Well, nobody is going to want to create "new cities".
Manhattan: 72,918 residents per square mile
Toronto: 11,468/sq mi)

China does it all the time. I read that China has used more concrete in the last twenty years than the US ever has. https://youtu.be/TiTDU8MZRYw

No stupid country is ever going to bother creating new cities. Young people can just suck it up and raise kids in condos or if lucky in a townhouse. Worked for East Germany and Croatia.
