Sometimes Chats bots like copilot get in my way. Always a positive conclusion to the question or search at the end.

.

I find copilot irritating a s***, I really dislike that "feature"....

I find it useful for some things (like giving me the basic structure for a programming script or query), and for others, leave me be, I just want a web search. The premium version has its uses too, though not enough for me to keep the subscription going.

This is interesting on two fronts. I have noticed many fakes in the power of machine learning lately.

The Estate of George Carlin Destroys AI George Carlin in Victory for Copyright Protection (and Basic Decency)

Although the show's hosts Chad Kultgen and Will Sasso insisted to journalists in January that the entire special was generated by letting AI study oodles of pre-existing material, it was later revealed that "the fictional Dudesy character was not AI-generated and that Kultgen wrote the entire fake Carlin special rather than it being trained on previous work."

I dislike the thing but “slashed its Vision Pro shipments to 400,000-450,000” is hardly bad news for a niche product that’s $3500. That’s $1,579,000,000 in sales. Apple sells mostly direct so their profit margin is high. Net is almost 30%.

I like the meme better on its own because it’s fun to laugh at it.

Boston Dynamics has released a new video of its latest ATLAS humanoid robot - which is now fully electric meaning it has dispensed entirely with the older hydraulic system. If you recall originally Atlas was conceived and marketed as a "hazmat-type" rescue unit which could go places where humans could not, i.e. a nuclear reactor for example in the case of a coolant or fuel leak.

You can see all sort of potential applications for this unit, some of them frankly unsettling but not remotely surprising. Remember virtually all technological breakthroughs which translated into the civiian sector almost all came out of military research, i.e. microwaves as a potential weapon = microwave ovens once adapted for non-military applications. As Atlas develops there is no doubt planners and military establishments will obviously consider options such as robotic first responders, police/MP's and naturally the ultimate goal, electric-humanoid soldiers.

Boston dynamics always seems like gimmicky marketing to me. Are humanoid forms the best for any type of movement - military, rescue, or otherwise? I doubt it.

The best robots in military use right now are drones.

Those human bio suit things that extend your range and strength are pretty cool. That's likely the future outside of whatever Tesla makes to vacuum your floor and walk through windows.

Know it all.

You need to remember when it comes to all technologies military that there is the public "aw isn't the Spot military dog for the US Army cute!" vs the very non public, highly secretive and top secret "and here is what Spot can actually do!" variation.

BD has held contracts with the US military for well over a decade and they are certainly not publishing these periodic updates showing you the very latest version of their weapons platforms replete with all their associated technological capabilities.

BD was spun off from MIT which has had close links to the US military establishment since well before the commercial internet, going back to the ArpaNET of the 1960's.

And who owns BD today? Hyundai Heavy Industries merely one of the most powerful global corporations and the largest shipbuilder in the world currently building next generation combat naval vessels for everyone from South Korea to the Phillipines to Chile and beyond. They even have a signed agreement with Babcock Canada and are now involved with our next generation Patrol Submarine project.

HHI is massively capitalized and dug in deep with the Defence establishments of many countries - and certainly the ones that matter most. While Google, when it owned BD pledged not to develop robotics projects that could be militarized - too late BD already had extensive and ongoing projects with the US Army - HHI has pledged no such thing nor signed any such memorandum or protocol.

Ultimately the "if not us then the other guys" mentaility will prevail and AI and robotic R & D will continue - in secret largely - until it inexorably reaches whatever its logical conclusion turns out to be. And that is a scary thought. James Cameron had this to say in an interview in Ottawa not long ago when asked about the concerns around AI, weaponization and "near future possibilities":

......“I absolutely share that concern..I warned you guys in 1984, and you didn't listen....Cameron said it’s important to evaluate who is developing the technology, and whether they’re doing it for profit — “teaching greed” — or for defence, what he called “teaching paranoia.”

“I think the weaponization of AI is the biggest danger....and that we will get into the equivalent of a nuclear arms race with AI, and if we don't build it, the other guys are for sure going to build it, and so then it'll escalate........you could easily imagine an AI in a global combat theatre, the whole thing just being fought by the computers at a speed humans can no longer intercede, and you have no ability to de-escalate.”

Does anyone actually think that (AI research for the purpose of building next gen weaponry) is not happening right now? Because I have pristine beachfront property for the sale on the moon if you do.

Machine learning has been around since the 50s. It’s already in the weapons. F-35 for example. Probably previous generations of fighter jets.

Yup robotic submarines, robotic torpedo's, aircraft, battlefield vehicles - all already here and in production. AI-driven military software, cyberwarfare, UAV's, drones etc etc. And all continuing to advance - rapidly.
