Online streaming services must hand over 5% of domestic revenues, CRTC says

Money will be used to boost funding for local, Indigenous broadcasting, per briefing

So our Netflix bill will go up 5% or more and that'll go to producing some type of content most people do not want to consume.  That would not be commercially successful without our money.

A ton of it will in some way, shape or form be broadcast via the CBC as exclusive content on their channels.

Know it all.

Fewer streaming services will be available “in Canada”. Will need to pay for a VPN to see the content you want

We were using our son's Netflix account for the last couple of years. Went to watch a show yesterday, and we got a message saying this household did not have a Netflix account. Then it said, "did we get it wrong? MMMM are you travelling? If so, we will send a code to your email and your account will be valid at this address for 14 days."

I assumed that would knock him off at his address for the 14 days. Guess I will have to pony up for my own account.

The government already took $100,000,000 from Google for sharing "news", and they want more?

I've noticed that since Rudy B. was turfed from the Knowledge Network, their program selection does not interest us nearly as much as it used to. I have to say, we're really not interested in indigenous programming. We used to watch Knowledge a lot, but not so much these days.

I too am disappointed by much of their programming these days.

It’s turning into the Indoctrination Network.

Corus lost a bunch of US channels to Rogers, and it is estimated Corus will see much less revenue (like $150 million) less per year because of the licensing loss.

Know it all.

Apple Tries to Rein In Hollywood Spending After Years of Losses

https://www.bloomber...years-of-losses

Apple is spending billions of dollars a year on original programming that has received strong reviews and many awards nominations. But its streaming service is attracting just 0.2% of TV viewing in the US.

Apple TV+ generates less viewing in one month than Netflix does in one day.

Isn’t Netflix’s library like, 10x the size? That plus no native Android app do not help. Apple does have lots of good original content though.

I think I watch 75% of what Apple produces. Top notch, much better than Netflix!

But Netflix still sucks.

most new streaming content on all platforms in 2024 sucks. Don’t know if that’s just because I’m becoming out of touch

These days hardly any new raunchy comedies
