The Vancouver Island Raiders junior football team is reeling after thieves stole an estimated $50,000 in football equipment — a crime that could threaten the future of the organization.

 

The theft happened Aug. 31 at the team’s Caledonia Park facility at 110 Wall St.

 

Nanaimo RCMP noticed pry marks on a metal door at the site. Taken was equipment that includes helmets, jerseys, pads, footballs, head sets and compressors.

 

The theft is just the latest in a series of setbacks for the team.

I would think if they ralied all the other league (and even other league/sports - BC Lions?) teams, ran an online fund-rasier, appealed to the largest sponsors, they'd get the money pretty quick for new gear.

After dominating the field all season long, the same story continued at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna on Saturday night (Oct. 22) as the Sun beat the Westshore Rebels 38-0 in the BC Conference (BCFC) championship.

Westshore Rebels head coach Dexter Jenke may have uttered the understatement of the fledgling B.C. Football Conference season following his club’s 70-10 victory Saturday over the Kamloops Broncos at Starlight Stadium: “We’ve definitely done well and executed our game plan.”

 

That and so much more as, combined with the opening 69-0 win over the Vancouver Island Raiders in the Island derby last week in Nanaimo, the Rebels have outscored their opponents 139-10 over their first two games.

The Okanagan Sun are the defending champions. But this B.C. Football Conference season has belonged to the Westshore Rebels, who are 11-0 in regular season and playoffs, heading into today’s Cullen Cup league championship game against the second-seed Sun at 3 p.m. at Starlight Stadium in Langford.

 

It’s a flip of last season when the Sun went undefeated on their way to the Canadian Bowl national championship, defeating the Rebels 38-0 along the way in the BCFC Cullen Cup championship game at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna.

The 2023 B.C. Football Conference season has belonged to undefeated Westshore (12-0).

 

But the Rebels found themselves in an unfamiliar position at half-time of the Cullen Cup league championship game on Saturday, trailing the defending champion Okanagan Sun 12-4, in a peculiar half punctuated by three safeties.

 

Then came something lifted out of a movie script: “The veterans, myself included, stood up in the dressing room at half time and said a few words — that we are a special family and this is not how it ends for us,” said star Westshore running-back Gerren Hardisty.

 

Inspired, the Rebels pulled themselves together in the second half and rode a 29-point third quarter to a 33-19 victory at Starlight Stadium to hoist the Cullen Cup for the first time since 2016.

 

The club will be looking for its first Canadian Bowl title when it hosts the 115th national junior championship game on Nov. 11 at Starlight against the winners of the semifinal next Saturday between the champions of the Prairie and Ontario conferences.

The Canadian Bowl will be played in perfect weather this weekend, according to Westshore Rebels head coach Dexter Janke.

“Perfect football weather is any weather in which football is being played,” says Janke.

The Championship of junior football kicks off at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Langford’s Starlight Stadium, and there’s more perfection in play than just the weather.

Roger Wade, the general manager of the Westshore Rebels football team and a former four-term Langford councillor, has passed away.

 

Wade, who was first elected to council in 2008, “played a pivotal role in the growth and development of Langford,” says Mayor Scott Goodmanson.

 

“Our thoughts are with the Wade family during this challenging time,” he said.

A celebration of life for former Langford city councillor Roger Wade is planned for next week at Starlight Stadium.

 

Wade, 61, was a devoted husband and father of three who served on city council for four terms.

 

He was also the general manager of the West Shore Rebels junior football team and had a passion for sports and making sure the municipality had opportunities for recreation and for residents to be active.
