Beauty Day at Our Place allows women to shine

Event returns after COVID-hiatus to make female ‘oasis of beauty,’ says program manager

I would say it’s generally true that there are few if any particularly physically attractive homeless people. So there might be something to this idea.

The case for giving people experiencing homelessness ‘voice and choice’

Some TV media have made a cottage industry of sensationalizing and dehumanizing people experiencing homelessness, contributing to the hardening of hearts.

But the uncomfortable truth is that as much as we want there to be simple solutions and clear-cut villains and heroes, the problem of homelessness has many root causes, many different symptoms and requires an ability to embrace nuance, human agency and, yes, compassion.

In the current system, Reid said, “We’re not asking people, ‘Where would you feel safe other than here?’ We’re saying, ‘This is what I have for you, and I’m going to take the only home that you’ve known for the last however long it is from you.’ We’re not giving options where people would still feel safe to go to.”

We can only bend over backwards so far.

No one is being helped long term by the enabling of factors that lead to or exacerbate homelessness i.e. addiction.

I was watching a Vice documentary filmed in Abbotsford about the rise of more powerful synthetic drugs. It looks like things are going to get much worse as these drugs are destroying their users, not just making them addicts, but destructing them from the inside out.

The great fear, I recall from my school days at UVic, was the future threat of synthetics. Meth was the beginning, and already bad enough. Now we have a full gamut of terribly harmful and incredibly addictive synthetics that have replaced heroin, cocaine, shrooms and weed.

Never heard of this event but what a good idea.

To see oneself in a different light may give a boost in confidence and offer an ounce of hope.

I have been watching a TV show called "Beat" about Vancouver policing the downtown east side.

It's quite old, but the cops don't understand how providing free needles and safe shooting galleries is going to help anyone overcome addiction.

Quite depressing to realize that we have been doing this for at least 20 years and the problems just get worse.

You would think some of the bright lights would have figured out that this wasn't working.

You have to wonder who is more mentally ill - the addicts or their advocates?

Lots of great jobs by leaving the addicts on the streets.

A lot of people are being employed in fairly well paying low skill jobs. Our Place up to 260 staff now. Plus probably another 150+ security jobs.

Our Place is just the tip of the iceberg, guessing the numbers are much higher. All sorts of agencies and social workers all of whom will fight tooth and nail for those jobs since they have little or no value in the private sector.

They are the equivalent of daycare workers, but with a generally less helpless entourage to corral.

People living on Edmonds’ streets may soon be given a choice: bus to a shelter up to 35 miles away or risk a fine of up to $1,000 with a possibility of jail time.

The Edmonds City Council passed an ordinance last Tuesday making it illegal to occupy or store belongings in public places overnight, part of both a regional and national trend of local governments criminalizing visible homelessness. Edmonds’ ordinance is unusual in that its enforcement requires relying on social services outside city limits.

Mercer Island passed a similar law banning camping in public places last year, a month before Everett passed a “no sit, no lie” ordinance. Auburn followed suit, turning a civil infraction for public camping into a criminal penalty.

In Edmonds, city officials say the measure is partly preemptive, aimed at keeping what residents see as the growing homelessness crisis in Seattle out of their city. There are at least 450 homeless people living in Edmonds, according to the city’s latest assessment; 117 of them are students. City officials say there are 10 to 20 people sleeping outside on any given night.

A new home for women at risk of homelessness is under construction in Victoria following a groundbreaking ceremony on May 17.

Anawim Companions Society is behind the project, and is aiming to build on the success of their Men’s House, which has helped hundreds of residents since opening in 1991, according to a release.

The project has been a dream of the organization for years, and was kick-started by an anonymous person who donated the property for the home. The society then partnered with Aryze Development, which provided its services at cost to help navigate the zoning and permitting process.

Two questions most of us likely have. Neither addressed in the article.

Where is it?

Is it “dry” like the other Anawim facility?

The press release did not identify the area either. Likely for the protection of the future occupants.

Yes, some womens shelters do try to remain anonymous. The part of town would have been useful though. I don’t know.

Anawim is one of the few local organizations that actually improves the lives of those they serve. I am happy to have them as my neighbour.

How ridiculous, though...presumably people are homeless because they can't afford to rent a place to live; yet they are somehow going to be able to come up with a $1k fine?  And how much is it going to cost Edmonds City to apprehend, charge, try, and convict?  Lastly, if  were homeless on the west coast in the rainy months, a night in jail seems like a pretty good deal - warm, dry, a shower, and a couple of hot meals...

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

The politics of homelessness have always thrived on the inscrutable premise that homelessness and other social issues "belong" in certain locales where such issues are deemed to be appropriate (deemed by whom? for how long? based on what determinants?). The CoV has tailored itself to be a textbook example of this absurdity.

Responding to what city staff are calling a “homelessness crisis,” Halifax city council has agreed to open four parks to camping for a total of 32 people without homes.

The plan approved unanimously in a council meeting Tuesday night is a first for the city, which last year saw tensions flare when temporary wooden shelters built on municipal property by a community organization were removed at the city’s direction.

Coun. Lindell Smith said the goal is to provide added safety for people sleeping rough. Those camping at the four parks and green spaces will “not have to fear that we’ll be removing them because they’re staying there,” Smith said in an interview Wednesday.

The city hopes to prevent “any future issues or potential conflicts like we’ve seen last year,” Smith said, referring to the removal by police last August of wooden shelters and tents used by homeless people.
