One man has been rushed to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital after he was stabbed at a construction site near Ladysmith.

RCMP, Cranberry Volunteer Fire Department and B.C. Ambulance responded to the scene on the 1400 block of Timberlands Road shortly after noon when a security guard was stabbed, allegedly, over a dispute over an illegal fire with a person experiencing homelessness.

“There was actually two security guards [involved],” said Ron Gueulette, Cranberry fire chief. “One guy didn’t want to go in by himself, so he called for a backup and they both went in.”

Gueulette said when one of the security guards tried to take a photo of the alleged assailant’s vehicle, the suspect jumped out with a knife and attacked the two men.

Have we heard more about the death near Sooke, suspected to have been a homicide?

Sunday’s shooting has community members planning a public safety rally for Thursday.

“For certain, it’s a flashpoint moment,” said Collen Middleton, chair of the non-partisan Nanaimo Area Public Safety Association.

Middleton says the group appreciates the province’s efforts to increase policing and mental health and addiction supports, but more is needed.

“We really have been bearing the burden of this crisis as a civil society for a very long time now, and so we are really out of patience,” she said.

With numerous speakers planned, the rally will happen at Pearson Park at 11 a.m.

Meanwhile, in Victoria council is trying to muzzle a councillor who wants greater protection for the general public in light of violent and disruptive incidents in his community.

^^ They should hold that rally on a Saturday, when more working people can attend.

We need such a rally here.

'Enough is enough': How the shooting in Nanaimo unfolded

Clint Smith was shot while trying to retrieve tools stolen from his shop.

Callaghan said Smith tapped him and four others to go to the encampment on Sunday to help recover a table saw and other items stolen from his shop, Ernie’s Blackpoint Repair

Callaghan, a member of the Van Isle Clean Team who cleans up abandoned camps in the city, said he suspected the stolen property was at the camp near Terminal Avenue, because he believed the people there had stolen other items previously.

At the top of the path down to the camp, they found some of Smith’s missing items, he said.

The group ducked under a metal barrier on Terminal Avenue to make their way down the steep dirt path to a large tent, where they found six men and two women, Callaghan said.

They demanded that everyone get out of the tent so they could search it for other stolen items, he said.

Smith saw his table saw and tried to retrieve it, but someone in the tent went in for a punch, so Smith socked him, Callaghan said.

Then one of the campers came at Smith, “wailing” on him with a baseball bat, and two men jumped to Smith’s defence, he said.

That’s when two people from the camp brought out guns, a rifle and a pellet gun.

“They said they were going to kill us all,” Callaghan said.

Someone managed to briefly disarm the man holding the pellet gun.

He picked it up again, but it didn’t appear to be working and the man was shoved down the embankment, Callaghan said.

Smith was hit by three bullets at some point, but Callaghan isn’t sure exactly when it happened. The group ran back up the hill and across Terminal Avenue, chased by a man with a rifle.

On the plus side, a fire might hasten Tiny Town's demise.

New organization to help the City of Nanaimo get funding for the homeless

The organization will start operations in April. It’s been funded by $450,000 annually over four years.

"...it will collect information to help lobby senior levels of government for funding to better tackle the homelessness crisis..."

How is this different than what dozens of other agencies are already (allegedly) doing?

This one will do it harder, since it has $450,000/yr. to make the point.

Nanaimo’s Mayor, Leonard Krog, says it’s a hopeful exercise funded by the city.

“A lot of money is spent on the health of our community around homelessness, addiction, mental health, brain injury trauma and I think most of us think it’s not producing much by way of good results.”

Why can't communities just say "let's see where they have little or no homeless., and see what they do?"

Alberta main solution to drug addiction seems to be to ship them to B.C.

When they're being welcomed with open arms (no pun intended), why wouldn't the rest of Canada ship their addicts here?

A frightening moment was caught on camera this weekend as a fire broke out in a tent set up in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

Inside the tent on Main near East Hastings several propane tanks were found, which the fire department calls a "serious risk."

The fire started around 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, according to Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) Capt. Matthew Trudeau.

https://www.timescol...astside-6728812

"Upon arrival firefighters found multiple tents on fire which was spreading into the building," he writes in an email to V.I.A. "Crews knocked the exterior fire down and checked inside for any fire extension."

It's one of a series of tent fires in the area; Trudeau notes last weekend there were three on East Hastings. In one fire a woman was discovered dead in a tent, having passed before the fire started.
