Also, Stirling’s show just referenced a Saanich warming centre at the Native Friendship Centre.

So it might be 10.

Doesn't sound like that is really enough...

I have a family member who lives just over the Saanich border from Victoria. There's a bit of "rough" area near their street, which a homeless person, complete with bikes, tarps and all manner of stuff has set up an encampment. They're somewhat concerned as they have a dog, esp. after what happened to the cat that was exposed to meth. I guess closing down Pandora wasn't without pushing the problems elsewhere.

London Breed is about to join a growing club: Democratic mayors who’ve been ousted by voters fed up with their cities’ post-pandemic struggles.

The incumbent mayor of San Francisco lost Tuesday’s election to Daniel Lurie, a Levi’s heir and nonprofit founder, by more than 12 points. She has led the city for over six years as it battled against surges in deaths from drug overdoses, brazen retail theft, widespread homelessness and a decline in population as newly remote workers fanned out to other parts of the state and country.

I do think the weather is part of it, but it's not the only thing.  The services offered is the major one.  If other cities/provinces had enough services and proper shelter, the climate would be a non issue.

Services should be mandated by  government to all provinces. Stop the smorgasbord of services. No more woke agenda  .Basic services focused on recovery and services after to help people stay with recovery. We are putting tax dollars on the wrong end of addiction.

We need to get back to this simple way of running our communities: No Loitering.

Everything stems from maintaining control over public and private spaces. If you let one bylaw or restriction slip, they eventually all will.

After three years in operation, councillors in Victoria are considering asking other municipalities to host the modular community of Caledonia Place.

The 30-unit shipping container community of Caledonia Place—formerly known as Tiny Town—will be removed next October after three years of operation. The modular community has faced criticism, closures, and multiple permit extensions.

It will be around for another decade after the other municipalities ignore Victoria.

If Saanich - after forgetting to tell residents along Mann Avenue they would be losing their on-street parking to bike lanes and then immediately unveiling a mind-boggling McKenzie/Quadra plan - think their chances for re-election will get stronger by opening a shelter, they may need to take a page out of the last Victoria council’s handbook.

Also, where does Victoria think such a shelter would go, if not immediately adjacent to the Victoria border off Douglas, to the west? It’s not going to go in at Royal Oak. Councillor Gardiner said it’s not even about money (for Victoria). So if it’s not about the money, is the potential of a shelter on the opposite side of Victoria-proper the best solution? It will create a thoroughfare from one base of services to another, that we already sort of have between the supportive housing facilities in Burnside Gorge and downtown. A formal facility will entrench the two nodes.

Ultimately, poor Burnside Gorge.

So much for downtown seeming to get better. Along with smashed windows on Douglas between Pandora and Fort that we’ve already covered, now the former Johnson Street 7-11 has smashed in windows.

Saanich mayor Dean Murdoch on CFAX:

District is looking for additional shelter spaces in addition to shelter spaces at the Native Friendship Centre. They want a regional response, following Victoria's call for other municipalities to support homeless persons with shelters.

this is the correct way, else the places that do offer get an outsized portion of their share and over subscribed services.  Good move to say we want a regional response, not just for Saanich to do something.

All munis and cities across BC and Canada should be mandated to do this, with number of spaces as a proportion of their population.

We had the same response 20 years ago during the Leonard era.

I have noticed that there is a -lot- more camping in parks on the West Shore. The municipality is being inundated, is how it was framed by someone I was talking with.

The City of Victoria is hoping to broker a deal to move a supportive housing project at Royal Athletic Park — previously known as Tiny Town — to another municipality in the region.

Council unanimously endorsed having Mayor Marianne Alto write to other councils and electoral area representatives in Greater Victoria to determine if there is any interest in hosting the Caledonia Place facility starting next year.

Coun. Jeremy Caradonna said it’s important to start the conversation now as the housing project, established during the pandemic, will have exhausted its temporary-use permit at 940 Caledonia Ave. in October 2025.

He noted there is a vulnerable group of people living in the facility and he did not want council to find itself scrambling for options as it faced a fall deadline.

He said the most prudent move is to invite other jurisdictions that have the space to take it on.

“Many of our neighbours have a lot more land than we do. They have hardscapes, they have parking lots,” he said, noting the facility requires about 20,000 square feet of space and access to electrical and plumbing.

Const. Mark Jenkins, a community resource officer for the city, said the city was able to secure the C-can which Solid Outreach Society had been managing at that location (926 Pandora).
