so there are 765 homeless in Victoria, seems low from my perspective.  Are we counting all those living in the purchased hotels in Victoria because to me they are just temporary housed?

Ever been in one of those buildings btw?  I had the unpleasure once and I have no idea how the building was still standing, all those hotels are going to have to be torn down in the not too distant future IMO.

Then generally do not interview all of those in some type of housing.  So the total for interview questions are just those mostly sleeping rough.

Why are seniors not those over 65. I really wonder if these surveys contain more spin than fact.

Get off the drugs, get a job.
Serious mental health issues? Likely a very small percentage of them, but maybe growing with rampant drug use.

You don’t end up on the street, generally, because you’re choosing that over other options. I don’t think the majority of the people on the street can hold down work. It’s not a matter of them wanting to, there’s just a lot going on, I think.

Don’t underestimate the amount of casual or temporary or piece work there might be.

If someone chose that then there are consequences for their actions and its not my problem as a taxpayer.  Want do to heroin? your choice, there is a space for you under the Johnson St bridge and if some church wants to give them free food, cool, but as a taxpayer, no thanks.

Their should be ads showing this is what your like will be like on drugs  NOT do drugs with a friend ads.  What's next?  You might get shot when you rob a bank, better bring a friend lol.  its illegal

Its shocking how the homeless situation is condoned, and for that I reference the latest provincial election results.  The majority of the City of Victoria voters think its perfectly acceptable

I agree. Taxpayers should not support homeless drug addicted people.

If you're on welfare and/or live in supportive/low income housing you should have regular mandatory blood/drug testing and consequences if you test positive, and rewards if you test negative.

Heck, many employers require drug testing, so why not social programs?

CRD municipalities sending unhoused to Victoria in taxis

With winter around the corner, securing shelter for homeless people in Greater Victoria is the top agenda item for Victoria council.

Victoria Mayor, Marianne Alto is calling for the 13 other municipalities to step up.

“The City of Victoria has again, been placed in the position of taking on the lion’s share of response to any emergency weather incidents for the entire region.”

Providing support and resources goes beyond providing shelter. Today, Victoria councillors learned other municipalities in the Greater Victoria region are sending their homeless to Victoria.

And according to Tanya Seal-Jones, Victoria’s emergency program coordinator, the city is picking up the tab.

“The reason we know from last season that people were coming from outside municipalities is that we were receiving them by taxi and paying the taxi bill when they arrived at the warming centre,” Seal-Jones said.

“That is very frustrating. Yes,” Alto said.

Victoria council calls on Saanich to create more shelter space

Coun. Jeremy Caradonna said the city is frustrated that Saanich is bigger than Victoria, has more industrial land and warehouses, yet has not “stepped up to the plate”

https://www.timescol...r-space-9779259

Saanich should just say “until the province shows us a program that doesn’t create street disorder, we simply can’t have any of this type of housing”. Then just point to Nigel as the type of housing they do welcome.

Sooke has already stepped up. And Victoria is one of the 13, so they mean 11, right?

it's like we are in a "the beatings will continue until morale improves" dystopia

Perhaps the City of Victoria shouldn't have rolled out the red carpet for so many to migrate here, then they wouldn't be overrun and demanding other municipalities to step up.

Councillor Kim called homeless people “our region’s climate refugees,” when people require emergency shelter spaces in the city.

I think that’s an honest sentiment, as we suspect the majority of people living on our streets are not from this region, and moved here to access services and for a milder climate, presumably.

I do think the weather is part of it, but it's not the only thing.  The services offered is the major one.  If other cities/provinces had enough services and proper shelter, the climate would be a non issue.

I think that's what they meant...  Will a taxi go from Sooke to Victoria?

Also, Stirling’s show just referenced a Saanich warming centre at the Native Friendship Centre.

So it might be 10.
