43 years ago, today.

Mt. St. Helens.

Mount St. Helens erupted 43 years ago Thursday: Here's how it unfolded

While the most devastating acts from the eruption of Mt. St. Helens occurred on May 18, 1980, scientists began getting an inkling something was up a little more than two months before the eruption. The USGS released a day-by-day rundown reliving those anxiety-ridden weeks.

An earthquake measured at magnitude 4.5 was felt in Greater Victoria on Sunday night. People reported their buildings shaking slightly for a few seconds at 7:21 p.m. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was at a depth of 55.7 km about 65.3 kilometres southeast of Victoria in Washington state, near Marrowstone, at 48.025°N and 122.721°W. There were no immediate reports of damage and none would be expected, Earthquakes Canada said on its website. It said the earthquake was "lightly felt in Victoria." No tsunami warning or advisory was issued.

Downgraded to 4.2.

I didn’t feel it. I was near downtown at the time.

Know it all.

Active earthquake fault line found in Elk Lake area

An international team of academics has mapped the fault line, which could lead to an earthquake big enough to topple downtown buildings

The team identified an earthquake along the fault line between 2,300 and 4,700 years ago, which in a geological time frame is relatively recent, Nissen said.

“The Earth’s crust is riddled with faults that are hundreds of millions of years old. But you know, most of them don’t continue to be active today. But if you see something that has been active just in the last few thousand years, then we call it an active fault,” he said.

The earthquake linked to the fault line was of a magnitude between 6.1 and 7.6.

If an earthquake of a magnitude in that range were to hit along the fault line today, it would be “very, very damaging,” Nissen said.

Some older buildings would likely collapse, including some schools, brick buildings downtown, the legislature and the Royal B.C. Museum.

“We certainly don’t rule out there being fatalities, people sort of buried in rubble,” he said.

There could be damage to the Pat Bay Highway, since the fault line crosses the highway, and major transportation issues as a result.

It is, but in a human lifetime scale, it's ages ago.  As in at least 115 generations ago.

I'm skeptical with that timeline, or range, too.

I like how the article goes on to describe the impending doom from this “active” fault line that some kids made up.

Greater Victoria housing can’t come at the cost of seismic safety

“..We do know, however, based on occurrence rates of past earthquakes, that there is approximately a 48% chance of structurally damaging shaking in Victoria in the next 100 years (Seeman et al 2011)...”: https://www.oakbayne...-safety-7120843

Some older buildings would likely collapse, including... brick buildings downtown,

See, this is one of those situations where subscribing to a very narrow definition of "downtown" could be advantageous.

I would think probably want to hire a “professional” if you’re getting into brick

This happened couple weeks ago in Vancouver:
“..the incident happened as concrete was being pumped into a chimney on the building, which burst, toppled over and pushed over a scaffolding tower, pinning workers underneath…”

“..The church is undergoing seismic upgrade and restoration work…”: https://vancouversun...2f2a6b1bd5/amp/

That's Vancouver for you. In Victoria we're much more enlightened and much more sensitive re: architectural heritage. In Victoria we would just tear the old building down.
