It is also a good reminder that you should never go into the back country alone.   Ideally you should go in a group of at least 4 so that if something serious happens one person stays behind with the injured person and the other two hike out.   Not enough people take the back country as seriously as they should and people in BC die from this each year.  Many, many more are badly injured.

In 1988 I hiked the West Coast Trail in late April, before the season started.   We were four of us and started at the same time as a dentist from Edmonton who was an experienced outdoors guy.  He motored ahead of us on the first day.

The second day he stumbled into our camp at breakfast.   He had chosen a path to try and get to the beach but got stuck in a large blow down area as it became dark.  He spent the night sitting on a log because he could not get out of the area.  He realized that hiking alone was a bad idea and joined us for the rest of the trip.

I can’t find the vibrating Victoria thread.

but today is the 20 year anniversary of the Nisqually Washington quake that moved about 117 bricks in one building.

I remember that.  I was in grade 12 but was at home at the time with chickenpox.  (Canada was a little late to the vaccination game)

Now you need a shingles herpes zoster vaccination.

Now you need a shingles herpes zoster vaccination.

Like Covid the shingles regime is two shots - the second one for both of us about two weeks ago put both me and my wife on our butts for 24+ hours. I have never reacted to any shot like that.

As far as the earthquake goes I was sitting in my office in Central Saanich when the entire building shook, and hard. We got the staff out in an orderly fashion and waited in the parking lot along with the rest of the employees from an adjacent building until the all clear was received. It was a heck of a good jolt and a stark reminder of what could happen - only much much worse - at any time along the west coast.

I was in Langford and it merely felt like a large truck driving by. The only reason I knew it was a quake was that I thought, wait, there's no road directly out that window.

Yes I was supposed to be in class, I was told apparently the class was in the middle of covering earthquakes at the time.

41 years ago today.

https://tdn.com/news...b320869c93.html

The COVID-19 pandemic is once again making most events commemorating the 41st anniversary of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens virtual, but the mountain itself slowly is becoming open to the public as snow melts and pandemic restrictions ease.

On the morning of May 18 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted, blowing away the top of the mountain and triggering landslides, mud flows and floods that killed 57 people, destroyed 200 homes and flattened 230 square miles of forest.

Last year, an abundance of 40th anniversary of events had been planned, but were forced online or canceled when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the county and state.

The problem with that app is it dings you about all sorts of stuff, and every time it does, it scares the bejesus out of you with its harsh tone.

Know it all.
Citified.ca is Victoria's most comprehensive research resource for new-build homes and commercial spaces.

In settings you can dial down some of the types of messages you receive. My tablet is set to receive more alerts in a wider geographic area than my phone

I guess they don’t need Twitter anymore?

No impacts felt after 4.6-magnitude earthquake hits 190 km off Port Hardy

A strong earthquake hit off the north coast of Vancouver Island Monday morning, but because of the remote location, there were no reports of it being felt. The 4.6-magnitude quake at 10:35 a.m.

Seattle Times:

Earthquake would trigger 20-foot tsunami in Seattle within 3 minutes, new report shows

Models showed a tsunami following a magnitude 7.5 quake would inundate Seattle’s shoreline under more than 20 feet of water, and reach parts of Bainbridge Island, Elliott Bay and Alki Point within three minutes, according to a study published Thursday by the Washington Department of Natural Resources.
