Interesting read....

With no concrete timetable for when international travel will resume at Kelowna International Airport (YLW), the airport is at risk of losing $2.5 million in revenue as a result, according to the airport’s director.

YLW director Sam Samaddar said that he was advised by WestJet that if the status surrounding the airport’s access to international travel is not sorted out soon, the airline company will have to decide whether or not to cancel a number of Sun destination flights scheduled for early December.

“If we lose these flights, they’re not coming back,” said Samaddar. “WestJet will not put on flights in the middle of winter and January and February for Sun destinations, because they know people will have already made their decisions on what they’re doing.”

Alaska is scheduled to restart a 1x daily YYJ-SEA in mid-November. Must be optimistic since I haven't seen anything suggesting YYJ was given the green light for international flights? The last official announcement I saw was from July announcing YHZ, YOW, YQB, YEG, and YWG being allowed to accept flights from International destinations, but clearly the change has now been made for YTZ as well.

...“In many discussions and dialogue with them, we’ve asked for what is the criteria and what is the timeline for opening up our airport back to accept international flights. We have not got an answer on any of that,” he said. We asked to give us the criteria for what was used for Quebec City and Toronto Island with Billy Bishop Airport, and they weren’t willing to provide that either.”

It's all about politics and nothing to do with public health at this point.

Southwest Airlines canceled more than 1,800 flights this weekend, disrupting the travel plans of thousands of customers and stranding flight crews — the airline blamed the meltdown on a combination of bad weather, air traffic control problems and its own shortage of available staff.

Other airlines canceled relatively few flights. Southwest did not comment on the disparity.

The disparity between Southwest’s operation and other airlines fueled speculation on social media that employees were calling out sick, with some suggesting it was in protest of a Covid vaccine mandate. Southwest said that was not the cause of the mass flight cancellations.

“It’s inaccurate,” a Southwest spokeswoman said by email. “There’s a lot of unfounded rumor and speculation circulating.”

The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, Southwest pilots’ labor union said that “we can say with confidence that our Pilots are not participating in any official or unofficial job actions.”

Mass Flight Cancelations ...SPECULATED TO BE PILOT VAXX STRIKE

On Friday, Southwest's pilot union filed legal docs seeking to halt a vaccine mandate that went into effect last week -- following Biden's order for federal workers and/or contractors, which applies to the airline. That was left unresolved heading into the weekend, it seems.

While Southwest hasn't spoken on a possible strike ... the union itself shot down the notion they were to blame, saying ... "[W]e can say with confidence that our Pilots are not participating in any official or unofficial job actions." Then ... some major shade.

They add... "Our Pilots will continue to overcome SWA management’s poor planning, as well as any external operational challenges, and remain the most productive Pilots in the world."

On the record, they're denying any sort of protest -- but there are reports, citing airline sources, that a massive "sickout" went down, and that ripple effects are still being felt.

You know it’s bad when tmz is taking photos of pilots at the airport.

I just quickly found another source for the real reason, since CNBC refused to even hint about the obvious pilot action until like the 19th paragraph.  Nothing to see here.  It's quite an art to avoid the actual meat of the story for so long.

Let's Go Brandon!

Global air industry data tracker FlightAware reported that 808 Southwest flights were canceled Saturday, nearly a quarter of the carrier’s schedule, and another 1,187 flights (36 percent) experienced some type of delay.

On Sunday, 1,112 flights (30 percent) never departed and 1,063 were delayed.

As of Sunday night, 33 more Southwest flights were canceled for Monday.

No other US carrier had more than 66 canceled flights on Saturday or 159 Sunday.

Southwest Airlines canceled several hundred more flights Monday following a weekend of major disruptions that it blamed on bad weather and air traffic control issues. The company and the pilots union said the cancellations were not in response to the airline's decision to mandate vaccinations.

Southwest cancelled more than 360 flights - 10% of its schedule for the day - on Monday, and more than 1,000 others were delayed, according to the FlightAware tracking service.

Shares of Southwest Airlines Co. briefly fell more than 4% before a partial recovery; they were down 3% by afternoon.

The third straight day of large-scale cancellations left thousands of passengers stranded and upset.

“My concern is we had no explanation really that was, I feel, very legitimate or believable,” said Brian Gesch of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, who was traveling through Reagan Washington National Airport with his wife. He doubted that weather and air traffic controllers were the real issue. “So we are frustrated and missing a day of work.”

Pilots are not conducting a sickout or slowdown to protest the vaccine mandate, according to the union, which said it “has not authorized, and will not condone, any job action.”

The pilots association offered another explanation: It said Southwest's operation “has become brittle and subject to massive failures under the slightest pressure” because of a lack of support from the company. The union complained about the “already strained relationship” between it and the company.
