Some WJA trans-border service trimming from Canada, including Kelowna, to Las Vegas of interest.

YYJ keeps LAS service, even with its earlier start in the winter season in Oct 2024 of this year, and into the late spring of 2025, unlike last year, when it was just the late spring to fend off Flair Air on the same route.

Air Canada service to YYJ from YYZ has shifted from main line service back to Rouge on the 3 X daily service from Victoria.
For most of the summer, AC main line was operating the 11am and 11pm departure with the B-737Max, as the 4pm was Rouge with the AirBus A320.
This was the first summer that AC added a 3rd daily flight to YYZ and I have heard there has been some good loads on some days, full on some and some light loads on some of the red eye.

Damn. That is what I get for booking early. Could have purchased the direct flight to Vegas! Guess I have to wait for my iternary to change so I can cancel my flight and rebook!

WestJet says 16 of its planes have been grounded after a massive hailstorm hit Calgary earlier this week, and the decreased capacity means it will have to cut flights across its network for the "foreseeable future."
The Calgary-based airline says those aircraft — 10 per cent of its fleet — need substantial repairs and inspections before they can fly again.
The carrier said 84 of its flights were cancelled Wednesday, with 106 cancelled Tuesday and 58 on Monday.
"We are incredibly disappointed to be disrupting the travel plans of our valued guests again this summer, and greatly appreciate your patience and understanding over the coming days as we weather the impact following this significant storm," Diederik Pen, president and chief operating officer of the airline, said in a news release.
The Calgary International Airport was pummelled by hail on Monday evening, forcing parts of its domestic terminal to close for repairs for an undetermined time.

Little birdie filled me in on alittle bit of news
A very interesting changes coming to Pacific Coastal Airlines this fall.
With the end of the P.C.A ( purchase capacity agreement ) with WJA on Encore routes and WJA Encore pulling daily service from YYJ to YLW this fall and winter, Pacific Coastal has been busy working on more capacity and frequencies on routes within BC.
Announcement coming near the end of Aug when they roll out their fall/winter program. Some fleet changes too.

I imagine they'll return to Cranbrook - they discontinued service there directly when they were operating a bunch of Link flights into that market.

They currently have 10 Saab 35-seaters. Wow.
and hopefully sell off their last 1900C too, or convert it to cargo and sent it to Africa like the other last 1900C.
I think routes like YYJ-YLW will see 3 times daily service on Saab. After AC Express pulled out of Penticton, they have been running twice daily Saab service to keep up with demand into YVR.
YYJ-YXS might also see the return of the Saab too and maybe even a second daily trip as many travelers need to get north, earlier in the day, than arriving in the noon hour.
With the closer of the YYC base, they may see some Saab pilots staying in AB or SK and flying for carriers out there that have Saab aircraft if BC is too expensive to move to for work.

Any cheap walk-up flights from YYJ, or stories of said flights?
Those days are pretty much gone. Walk up fares on most systems will be full fare, unless you have ID75/90 discount, ( carrier industry discount ).

Seems like a real lost opportunity.

Seems like a real lost opportunity.
From a Revenue Management standpoint, it's not. You don't want to train your customers to book last minute in order to get a discount, otherwise your overall revenue will suffer.

Pretty good rundown of that Brazil plane crash, lots of video.

This commentator points to severe icing (it's winter there), says you get into those flat spins and it's nearly impossible to break free from. Gotta get your nose down but it's easier said than done.
He says that's a danger with these commuter planes, this one was flying at 17,000 and he says that's right where ice conditions can be.

Plane travel, 99% of the time, is not a spontaneous affair, though.
I still think it’s a missed opportunity. There’s hardly a flight life been on, ever, where every seat is full.

Big day tomorrow with the Big Red Girl coming to YYJ. Hope everyone gets out to see her fly over and make her final smooth water landing. Snowbirds will be a nice touch

The 30 biggest airports in Canada have seen passenger capacity return to 98 per cent of 2019 levels on average, according to the Canadian Airports Council. The next 30 are at barely 70 per cent.
Driving the travel rebound is a surge along big-city routes. Flight volumes rose 19 per cent for Vancouver-Montreal, 12 per cent for Toronto-Vancouver, 10 per cent for Calgary-Vancouver and a whopping 51 per cent for Ottawa-Calgary over the past five years, according to figures provided to The Canadian Press by aviation data firm Cirium.
Correspondingly, airfares fell between two and 11 per cent on those routes despite rampant inflation and widespread fare increases.

Apparently the gear was the only thing damaged in the collision with the dyke so the crew likely reasoned they were better off to try the belly landing at Malakal, which is an international airport with full services. Maban, is a gravel strip in a rural area. There were no serious injuries reported.
