We are doomed as a society. So many big brains supposedly at these companies, and instantly they can grind the whole world to a halt by one dumb move.

This is a big mistake. It's also one that has happened before, though not quite to the same extent. Best example: https://www.computer...-explained.html

There's a lot of truth in this saying: "the only difference between ransomware and antivirus is who controls the CC server" (lots of variants of that, but yeah).

That's basically what happened here - someone goofed an update from Crowdstrike. Antivirus products generally have 'ring 0' access (ie. full admin/root access) on operating system files. To be clear, this wasn't a Windows or Microsoft mistake. It's 100% Crowdstrike. They could have done the same thing to Linux machines.

Crowdstrike is one of the top anti malware companies in the world. Combined with Microsoft (Defender), they have about 66% of the EDR market, I think.

And now the same nerds are pushing us into high-tech electric vehicles, connected to their networks with automated over-the-air updates.

It’s a calamitous future we’re headed for, and techies just can’t get over their addiction to silicon to see what they’re ushering in.

With a little luck the techies will push us into a new stone age. Maybe we'll get it right next time. fingers-crossed-emoji.png

It does seem crazy. Porter was down for 6 or more hours. Surely that puts their planes completely in the wrong place and reservations are irrecoverable.

These companies need stronger backup.

And they neee to test the backup.

They probably do have strong backups. It takes time to restore though and it’s not always the quickest or best solution.

Never heard of strike force or whatever and nothing in my life was impacted today by any computer problems, lucky or just oblivious?

Crowdstrike. Consumers wouldn’t have it, generally. It’s enterprise focused.

Not good enough to face scrutiny of consumers, clearly.

Governments have no guts to do anything about bad systems. Enterprise clients are too big to pivot away from them.

If you really want to test the mettle of software, it has to enter the consumer market.

VAA has posted June stats for YYJ

Up a good number overall Year over Year.

But you can see, more passengers jammed into less flights to YYJ.

https://yyj.ca/about...acts-and-stats/

And just a touch more passengers in June than YLW .....

But still behind YLW YTD #'s with only 800,000 thru YYJ vs 1 million and change already thru YLW so far for 2024.

Abandoned Boeing jetliner found in Alberta field

Hi there, this is Henry Tenby creator of JetFlix TV. I am in central Alberta and was shocked to find an historic Canadian aviation heritage item sitting by itself in the middle of nowhere in a field. The subject in question is a Boeing 737-200 jetliner that was painted into the scheme of Pacific Western airlines about 20 years ago. The aircraft was donated by Air Canada to the aviation museum at the Edmonton municipal airport around 2007. Flash forward to the mid 2020s and the aircraft finds itself rotting away in an abandoned field on the outskirts of Villeneuve airport north west of Edmonton, the jetliner and its fate remains a topic of debate and hopefully the Boeing will see brighter days in the years ahead.

The WestJet Group has slid into home plate late with some big additions to their Winter Sunny destinations and domestic service.

Many cities across western Canada getting bumped up service south and across Canada.

https://www.westjet....le--enhancing-c

High-lites for YYJ, adding a 3rd weekly flight to CUN and PVR over the winter, and now LAS will be from Oct 2024 till Spring 2025 after only offering it in the spring of 2025 up this change.

But the airline is cutting flights to YYJ in the fall to YLW, from daily, to low as only 3 days per week in the winter. Good news for PCA who may increase the aircraft size over the winter with demand.

But YLW gets to enjoy even more service than YYJ, CUN and PVR get busy with 5 and 6 flights per week as well as Mazatlán once weekly and Cabo twice weekly.

This new platform will take flight before the end of 2024, with plans to complete the installation on WestJet’s modern narrowbody fleet by the end of 2025. All wide-body aircraft are planned to be upgraded by the end of 2026.

I remember when Netflix was the only streaming service and my subscription was $5.95/month. Now, with more streaming competition than ever, it costs me $24/month before taxes.

It's 20.99 pre-tax. Also, that's your choice to pay for the highest tier of Netflix. You can pay 5.99 still... though that's ad-supported. Mid range is 16.49. I suspect Netflix is pretty on par with inflation.
