Yes, ironically the City of Victoria got exactly what it wanted.

Will cruise ships even return to Ogden Point, or will another port facility step up in the time-being? This is going to be an opportunity for the industry to re-assess where and how it does business due to the Jones Act.

Victoria council is getting what it wants. They wanted to reduce the amount of cruise ship dockings. be careful what you wish for. Their solution will be more bike lanes.

While it may not be more bike lanes, council's "solution" will certainly cost CoV taxpayers more money.

What is the annual financial impact on the CRD due to cruise ships?

$550 million? Something around there?

Perhaps Alaska will try to have the Jones Act thrown out or re-written.

...Revenues from cruise ship arrivals help maintain the infrastructure at the deep-water terminal as well as across the various community amenities that GVHA stewards. The spaces that Victorians love, such as the Ogden Point Breakwater, Ship Point, and the Inner Harbour Lower Causeway are maintained through multi-year capital project planning and ongoing repair and maintenance work...

...With the loss of cruise ship revenue, which accounts for more than 70 per cent of the GVHA’s annual revenue – or more than $12.5 million in 2020 alone – some service and employment cuts have had to be made. The GVHA notes that this year, the organization will be unable to plant and maintain the ‘Welcome to Victoria’ garden on the Lower Causeway near the legislature building...

^ ^ ^ or suspended for a year.  which could of course lead to a forever-exemption.  then both victoria and vancouver could lose some or all ships.

But we have a great opportunity to turn Ogden Point into bicycle parking and all the extra people biking downtown will make up the difference.

Perhaps if the cyclists are charged $1000/person/day to park here the GVHA can make up its revenue shortfall.

March 31st which year?

Good point, but I believe Lisa Helps has stated March 31, 2021 is the date when homelessness will end forever.

Sounds about right. If we add up the economic impact of all of Victoria's industries it comes out to 5x the GDP of the City!

I am looking forward to March 31st. On that day I am certain that everyone living in a park will be moved somewhere out of the park. We will have won and Victoria will be homeless free just like Medicine Hat and Mayor helps can get her nobel prize. On April 1st people will start setting up tents in Victoria parks.

Vancouver port says $3 million per boat.

Vancouver is also a home port, so that must have a much bigger financial impact than it would in Victoria?

We saw 260-ish ships in 2019.

From the GVHA, a response to an exchange on our Twitter post: “Thanks to everyone for the discussion. The space is heritage designated and any major alterations would come only with a full plan for the future. For now, we'll remain status quo and hope for future placemaking improvements in the years ahead.”

Which space is heritage designated? The Ogden Point parking lot?
