And you could pay to be the guy who gets to fish it out with the Canada Arm thing.

Looks like I am going to be moving my April 2021 cruise to April 2022.

— Holland America and Princess Cruises announced pauses on planned sailings in Alaska waters in response to health guidelines established since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

The cruise operators said Wednesday that trips scheduled to operate around Alaska have been postponed.

Princess cancelled six Alaska trips scheduled through May 14. Holland America cancelled sailings on three Alaska-bound ships through the first week of June and on three others through mid-May.

Carnival Cruise Line, which owns Princess and Holland America, announced Wednesday it was suspending all sailings until April 30.

I doubt that we will see any cruises stopping here this summer. Maybe at the end of the summer at the earliest. It is going to be another very difficult year I fear. I really hope I am mistaken.

news 1130:

Cruise ships banned from docking in Canada for a year

Cruise ship season in Vancouver is cancelled this year, with the federal government banning the vessels in all Canadian waters until February, 2022. The measures are meant to limit the spread of COVID-19 and allow public health authorities to focus on immediate issues related to the pandemic.

So will the CoV respond by spending millions turning Government Street into a pedestrian paradise?

I feel for the businesses that this might put under. Does anyone know how many are actually primarily dependent on the cruise ships.

This is going to be brutal. Downtown will be hit very, very hard.

Nah, the CoV just needs to take away some more curbside parking, add a few cheap plastic tables and chairs on the sidewalks and all will be fine.  <_<

I am not actually sure how many business, even downtown, were really all that dependent on the cruise ship business. The ships often seemed to be here for a few hours only and they just seeled to mill around.

From May-August I bet a lot of downtown businesses count on cruise ship passenger money.

I am not saying there were not a number of businesses but I am wondering if it is less than people might assume. Obviously the gift shops on Government and a few other stores there as well. But does anyone have a complete list?

it's cumulative i presume.  it's over 1 million people not dropping in for a few hours.  adds up.

People, whose money, for the most part, goes quite a bit further in Victoria than in a lot of American ports.

Think of all the jobs associated with the ships which we don't see, like onboard repairs, services associated to maintaining and managing Ogden Point, etc. There are tons and tons of jobs and businesses that relied fully or partially on cruise ships, and not just bars downtown.

that crowd is not very hard on social services either.  they rarely barricade themselves into social housing or cause bar fights while here for example.

Victoria council is getting what it wants. They wanted to reduce the amount of cruise ship dockings. be careful what you wish for. Their solution will be more bike lanes.
