Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was overruled when he pushed to extend a "no-sail order" on passenger cruises into next year, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the conversation today in the White House Situation Room.

Of course it's one thing for them to allow cruises; another for us to actually let them in.

what if they suspend the jones act to make it work? then they find it’s just as easy to keep the suspension permanent?

then Canada will never see any more cruise ships.

It hardly matters to Victoria. Whatever happens, we wouldn't be seeing a cruise ship until late April or early May, at the earliest. By then, this may be sorted out.

Don't be so sure.

Large cruise ships won't be able to dock at any of Canada's ports until at least the fall as the federal government extends its safety measure to limit the number of cases of the novel coronavirus in Canada.

Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced the extension during a news conference on Friday morning. In March, Ottawa had announced a ban on cruise ships carrying more than 500 passengers until July 1.

After July 1, cruise ships with overnight capacity in excess of 100 passengers will be prohibited from Canadian waters until October 31, 2020

Ban extended to Feb 28, 2021

^ The article raises an interesting point about how the CDC has approached this. While they've lifted the ban, they've issued an advisory against travel on cruise ships. Apparently this means that American insurance will not cover cruise voyages, since the person is ignoring an official government advisory.

Medipac and others are offering coverage now when there is an official government advisory.

The ship's captain announces 5 people have tested positive for Covid on SeaDream 1, the first cruise ship to embark on a voyage in the Caribbean since the pandemic shut down the cruise industry.

I predict the 2021 cruise ship season for Victoria will be a bust.

Much will depend on how soon a vaccine can be made widely available.

I admire your optimism. What's your premise? Vaccine success or that people will be OK with chancing it? Would Victoria OK arrivals if the cruise lines started up again?

i can see people being required to "get their shots" 2 weeks earlier in order to cruise.  maybe even include the shot in the cruise price.  old people (lots of cruise passengers fit this category) love doing that kind of thing in preparation.  they are less likely to book last minute but cruise lines have plenty of money to discount spaces to fill ships as they start back up.

People have been taking cruises in Europe for several months now without a vaccine. Never underestimate the desire of avid cruisers to get back on the open ocean.

I suppose that depends at least in part on what remains of the CoV's tourism economy. Government subsidies for service sector businesses will not last forever.

move over bike lanes!  the most popular attraction this christmas is a drive-thru!

A drive-through light and music show planned for Ogden Point over the holiday season is proving so popular that organizers are already considering extending the experience into January.

Victoria Wonderland is touted as a spectacular light and musical experience where families can stay in their vehicles for a slow drive with sights and sounds along the pier and through a large warehouse and the parking lot at Ogden Point.

The launch of online ticket sales Wednesday morning was so busy, it crashed the system, according to organizers. The site is expected to be operational again this morning with about half the tickets sold.

The event is scheduled to run from Dec. 7 to 31 with six shows a day and 50 cars per show, at a flat rate of $40 per vehicle on weekdays and $50 per vehicle on weekends. It will take about 25 minutes for each vehicle to complete the tour.

is that good for emissions?  how many cars equal one cruise ship?

the hotel grand pacific should really do this in their underground parking lot.  it takes about 12 minutes to drive to the bottom of it at full speed.

25 minutes to complete the tour. This might mean we have to postpone the climate crisis by a few years.

hopefully lots of folks come from the mainland to check it out.

with the per car pricing the key is to canvass the whole neighbourhood then use the largest SUV available to get several families inside one vehicle.

then afterwards go to a restaurant but break down into groups of only 6 there.

as you know bonnie henry does not recommend masks so - checks notes - oh hold on that was so earlier in the week. now she insists on masks.

A Christmas drive-in light and music show at Ogden Point in December has sold out just days after online tickets went on sale.
