But the trains now run on time. That’s all the common people ask.

A multi million dollar investment from the province will help deliver shore power to cruise ships docked at Victoria’s Ogden Point terminal in James Bay. More from the province:

The Province is providing $9 million to the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority to plan and install infrastructure at Ogden Point, allowing cruise ships to access clean hydroelectricity at the port, turn off their engines and help protect the environment.

“People want solutions to environmental concerns while also growing our economy,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Adding shore power will allow us to turn off large cruise ship engines by connecting vessels to clean electricity at Ogden Point. This will lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduce air pollution and create well-paying jobs that support sustainable tourism.”

The project will supply electricity to the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority’s deep-water terminal at Ogden Point in Victoria. Shore power will be installed at two berths, allowing multiple ships to draw electricity at the port, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air contaminants in the region.

“Today’s funding announcement by the Province of British Columbia is key to launching the next phase of this important initiative by the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority,” said Robert Lewis-Manning, CEO, Greater Victoria Harbour Authority. “Shore power is one of several initiatives supporting a sustainable working port cherished by the Lekwungen people, residents and visitors alike. We look forward to collaborating with our partners in planning and implementing this project, including Songhees and Esquimalt Nations (Lekwungen people), the cruise lines, BC Hydro and the City of Victoria.”

The cruise industry is a significant contributor to B.C.’s tourism sector and the local economies of port communities. In 2023, the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority estimates 320 cruise ships and approximately 850,000 passengers will dock at Ogden Point.

This funding will help the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority move ahead with this project and get started on work with BC Hydro. The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority will continue to work with the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations, BC Hydro, the cruise lines and the City of Victoria to develop a schematic design and deliver the installation of shore power infrastructure to Ogden Point.

Transportation is the province’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 40% of B.C.’s annual total. CleanBC is the Province’s plan to protect nature and build a cleaner economy. This funding supports the government’s plan by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, helping slow climate change, improving air quality and allowing the region to continue benefiting from the cruise ship industry.

The province is contributing $9 million toward detailed engineering designs for shore power at Ogden Point, so visiting cruise ships can turn off their engines and plug into the local power grid.

The total cost and timeline aren’t yet known, but advocates are hoping for federal funding to install shore power at two berths.

Greater Victoria Harbour Authority in recent years pegged the cost of shore power at up to $24.8 million.

$9 million just for engineering.

Isn’t it just an extension cord? A really thick one.

Seriously though, I presume they have to upgrade a line all the way back to a substation, maybe the one near Topaz Park (Horsey?).

And I guess it all goes underground.

Unless they can bring one under the harbour from the Viewfield substation.

According to this article a big cross ship can burn 1400 gallons of fuel per hour.

https://family.lovet...cruise-ship-use

So most ships stay here for about 5 hours but they are not likely at full power just sitting here.

Let’s say they burn 1000 per hour to run the generators while here. So 5,000 gallons.

How much does fuel cost?

What I’m saying is, is there no possibility for any cost recovery from the electricity sales?

Oh I think it’s much, much less when docked, no?

As per international standard (ISO/IEC/IEEC 80005-1), cruise vessels must be connected to an electrical supply from the shore, at either 6.6kV or 11kV up to 20 MVA.

https://www.cavotec....stems-for-ports

That doesn’t sound like we can just run a thick extension cord from Marg Gardiners house.

So that’s 20 mega volt amperes. 20 million volt amperes.

We’re gonna need an electrician to work this out for us.

What happens if I plug my electrical razor into the cruise ship socket with my universal travel adapter? Can it run on 6,600 volts? If so, can I expect a faster shave than 120v?

It will be more dermabrasion than shaving.

Oh I think it’s much, much less when docked, no?

Up to 80% of a cruise ship’s daily fuel consumption goes into the propulsion of the vessel. The rest is used for power generation for electricity, lights, ventilation, and other onboard services.

https://highseascrui...-a-cruise-ship/

A large cruise ship of over 1,200 feet in length can hold up to 2 million gallons of fuel. With diesel prices of $4.959 at the time of the article, it costs approximately $10 million to fuel a cruise ship fully.

OK, so it only uses 280 gallons an hour to keep the lights on.

Let’s call it 12,000 while it stays here. X $5 per gallon.

So that’s $60,000 of fuel it’ll save when in plugs in here.

So $24 million for shore power. Divided by $60,000 per ship visit.

That’ll need 4,000 ship visits to break even.

Is that about 15 years of ship visits?

Honestly this would be a good opportunity for BC Hydro to upgrade/add additional high voltage lines running through downtown/James bay for all the new buildings going up that will be requiring extra power. Maybe they can work out a way to split the costs.

Good thing they aren’t paying me the $9 million for planning.

3,482 cruise ship visits to break even.

I don’t know. I keep losing one decimal point somehow.

Or about the same as I am paying for 2 weeks aboard the Celebrity BEYOND.  ;)
