Good interview with local beer scribe Joe Wiebe (@thirstywriter) on CBC:

http://www.craftbeer...est_April12.mp3

Of interest is the evident expansion of brewpubbery to the West Shore - 4 Mile Pub in View Royal for sure this fall and reportedly the Loghouse in Langferd (would explain the new construction) as well. Both are mentioned during the above interview.

Canadian Collab!

May 1st: When breweries from around the country descend on Victoria for the Canadian Brewing Awards next week, competition will ferment into collaboration. It’s the first national beer collaboration and 25 breweries stretching from coast to coast, and incorporating over 6 different provinces, are using the annual Awards event to brew a special Canadian Collaboration beer for a cause. It’s a project that reflects the uniqueness of the craft beer industry, where competition continues to be underpinned by a sense of collective community and a passion for creativity.

The beer itself will bring together ingredients from local brewing regions across Canada, like Red Fife wheat from Ontario and natural Wildflower honey from Alberta, into an imperial Witbier christened the ‘Red and White Wit’. Each brewery is contributing a little piece of the recipe, with the final draft-only release expected in the Victoria area in early June. Full proceeds will be donated to a cause but the specifics haven’t been worked out yet; being brewers the group resolved to answer that question the best way they know how: over a beer.

There will be a week delay on the 3 Weeds and Maibock. Labels didn't arrive in time...

Anyways, 3 Weeds gets bottled tomorrow and Maibock on Monday. Should be in all stores (that ordered any) in BC by end of the week.

Anyone else caught up in the Phillips Snowcase frenzy? Phillips released a 24 pack advent calendar style variety pack last week and they've been selling out in every store they appear--often sold out before the actual beer arrives on the shelf. The brewery's own supply was exhausted just a couple of hours after it was announced on Facebook.

Private stores have been getting them over the last two days but government stores have been left waiting--shipments due to arrive today have been delayed until Tuesday.

Apparently there have been packaging problems due to the lack of specialized machinery meaning all 24 separate flavours have to be hand packed into the case. Also I have heard some cases were sent back to be shrinkwrapped, presumably because the cases weren't strong enough to hold two dozen glass bottles.

Popped into the Cascadia store at Uptown and they said people were lined up in anticipation of their Snowcase delivery and all six cases sold immediately.

Apparently most stores are selling it for just over $60 but I heard the Strathcona liquor store was selling their stock for $93! I'd like to confirm that's true as that's robbery.

There are 500 people on the waitlist for Phillips Snowcase at the Fort/Foul Bay liquor store which will only have 25 cases delivered tomorrow. The first 25 in line before opening tomorrow will receive a ticket that can be exchanged for the privilege of buying one of the coveted cases. Sounds like people will be lining up before dawn.

Very much resisting the uge to show up there in the morning and yelling, "What is wrong with you people?" at the line-up. Good beer is a wonderful thing, but no beer is that good.

I wonder how many will be scalpers, and how much they'll resell the cases for.

I paid $60 at Douglas Liquor Plus, but on the day of initial release (and impatient) it cost me $74 at Harris Green Liquor store.

We finally got ours. December 1 was Amnesiac IPA (8.5%) and today was Elsinore. I bet Christmas Eve is gingerbread!

I have one at the pub that we open and share with a customer every day.  Great idea.

Stay tuned for more info, but i have another project in the works that will add another 50 lines to my building, that will put us at 115 total, plus there will be some other products on tap.

say, OSJ.  you can compete with the Craft Beer Market in Van by offering a discount equal to the age on the birthday.  I'll be there next November.

sorry, it is illegal to offer a discounted price.  the price must be the same for everyone from open till close.

there is a new happy hour law moving forward though.

i'll gladly buy ya a beer fo rmaking the trip though, all you have to do is choose from the 115 + seperate draught beers by that time.

this is in the website of the Craft Beer Market:
"Celebrating a birthday? The older the better at CRAFT because we give you the age you're turning as the percentage off your bill. For example, turning 25 - get 25% off! Turning 50 - get 50% off your bill. You must show ID and discount only applies to the birthday boy/girl on their birthday."

so, is what they are doing illegal?

It's not illegal in Alberta, but it is here.

Here, you cannot not offer a discount to one person, that everyone is not eligible for.  I can't sell you beers for $4 on your birthday, and the next guy $5.25 because it's not his birthday.  I can't sell you beer for $4 in the afternoon and $5.25 at night.  I can't discount one beer brand, then have it "run out" before closing.
