The beef kebab, baked potato and corn on the cob sizzling on a barbecue outside Mary and Steve Barker’s James Bay home might make a passerby hungry, but biting into one of the many meals on display outside the home would be a big mistake.

The summer barbecue dinner, along with a charcuterie board, apple pie, jar of pickles and case of Ferrero Rocher, is made entirely from rocks.

"Slabs of rock" and "Sookehenge." Here's the trio of memorial art installations that council rejected at last night's meeting. They've been working on bringing a memorial art installation to Whiffin Spit for years now, and this was the result.

For those familiar with Whiffin Spit, the two Sookehenge designs would have been situated on the spit itself, while the slabs of rock at Quimper Park at the entrance to Whiffin Spit.

I'll leave you all to figure out which is which. The budget ranged from $33,600 to $41,900.

I haven't been to Whiffen Spit for years, but I think I would find any sort of sculpture there quite unnecessary. Nature is good enough.

The impetus for this whole pursuit is Sooke caused quite a ruckus for removing a memorial bench (maybe several) that they decided was no longer in good shape. The art installation at the spit is intended to be a memorial that plaques will be installed on.

I think I'd rather have a bench so I could sit and look at the view. What can you do with those things?

does this "partnership" include us paying tax dollars (probably to both the artists and pattison) to have this art displayed?  i presume it does.

https://www.timescol...ists-1.24146364

The City of Victoria has unveiled plans to exhibit local artwork on select downtown bus shelters and an outdoor art gallery through next year.

Through a partnership between Pattison Outdoor Advertising and the City of Victoria, posters showcasing the work of local artists will be displayed on six bus shelters in and around the Yates Street area.

^Yes, logic dictates the artist would get paid. You wouldn't say to the Pattison workmen installing the posters in the bus shelters, "Hey guys, how about putting up these posters without pay, it's a great way to show off your craftsmanship and get exposure."

^ i might actually.

no but my issue is that there are other ways to help artists, and one of canada's richest men, all over the city.

who vetted or chose the artists?  who voted for this plan?  was there public input or submissions?

most importantly  - is this a good use of money right now?  usually when pattison can't sell his ads he places his own radio station ad in them in them or even his tuna brand ads.

^ This ain't new, it's the third time around for this partnership with Pattison. Details on the call for submissions and selection process is on the website: https://www.victoria...exhibition.html
