Got curious and looked it up - here is what Wikipedia says - now I'm left to wonder what "Taino" is! But yeah as suspected there is Spanish influence which really is not surprising.
"Cuban cuisine is largely based on Spanish cuisine with influence from Taino, African and other Caribbean cuisines"
