Could be. Lots of business owners in town bought investment houses over the decades. Today each one is almost mortgage free or mortgage free, and valued at $1M.

It helps if you own your place of business (the space). Then you can lease it and live off that.

30 years of profitable business certain does add up unless you like a lavish lifestyle.

Yup, Zanzibar is closing.

Here’s their statement:

Dear valued customers,
After 24 incredible years in the community, it's with a heavy heart that we announce our restaurant, Cafe Zanzibar, will
close its doors on December 31st, 2024.

This was unfortunately not by choice. The landowners have decided it's time for change on the land which we have leased for the last 17 years - we have been privileged to call this space home for so long — at Zanzibar Cafe Brentwood Bay.
We would like to express our sincere thanks, for loyally supporting our family and business for over 24 years in Brentwood Bay. We have shared so many laughs, tears and delicious meals, it's been an honor.
Your patronage has made our journey unforgettable. We're proud to have been part of this community, serving you and sharing countless memories together. Please join us during the last 6 weeks of our time at Café Zanzibar. To express our appreciation for YOU, our amazing customers, we would like to offer free brewed coffee☕️ until December 31st, Tuesday to Thursdays from 930-1130 am.
Thank you for being part of our family. Your support means the world to us. Let's make these last few weeks unforgettable!

With love, Cafe Zanzibar Restaurant Staff & Your friend Moh❤️

I am so loving Sidney these days. Picked up a couple more meals at the Refire kitchen, excellent quality and good value.

Lunch at 900 degrees, almost as good as the pizza truck on salt spring!

A new waffle cafe is opening on the corner of Yates and Broad. Apparently December 1st.

Ah, so that’s what was being prepped. That’s at the former Wildfire Cafe space, I take it?

I’m surprised it wasn’t put up for sale.

If you are referring Olive Olio's, the building was sold. Andrew Wilkinson bought it.

Tiny names Taub new CEO

Victoria-based holding company Tiny has appointed former WeCommerce CEO Jordan Taub as chief executive.

Tiny Ltd., which amalgamated with the TSX-listed WeCommerce last year, owns controlling stakes in a number of software companies such as WeCommerce, Letterboxd and Dribbble.

Former Tiny co-CEO and co-founder Andrew Wilkinson said that Taub’s appointment will allow him and fellow co-founder Chris Sparling to focus on business acquisitions and long-term planning.

The company will continue to be chaired by Wilkinson, with Sparling as vice-chair.

Wilkinson and Sparling are also co-founders of Four Top Hospitality Group, which owns or holds majority ownership of six restaurants in the capital region.

Funny thing, google turns up nothing on this group aside from a dead domain.

After being a staple in Brentwood Bay for 25 years, Blue’s Bayou Cafe is going to be shutting its doors for the last time at the end of December.

Blue Benoit, one of the owners of the cafe, says after spending half his life in the restaurant, they felt it was time to call it quits.

“We’ve just been doing it since we were 13, 14, I’ve been behind that stove back there half my life,” he told CHEK News. “It’s time to enjoy life and travel a little more and take it easy a bit.”

Cafe Zanzibar also closing nearby

Blue’s Bayou Cafe is the second this month in the area to announce it is ending operations after decades.

Cafe Zanzibar, which is nearby on the Tsartlip Reserve, will also close at the end of December, ending 24 years of operating in the community.

I for one have never heard of either place.  Blue Bayou has good reviews.

Been to both. Lots of character. Food was fine. But only twice to each in a dozen years so 🤷‍♂️
