The head of Métro Média says the Quebec newspaper publisher will declare bankruptcy this week, permanently ending its coverage of local government in parts of the province's two largest cities.

CEO Andrew Mulé said in a Sunday post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the decision was made after the company abruptly suspended operations at its more than 30 hyper-local publications, including the Journal Metro and 16 print weeklies.

In a statement sent to employees on Aug. 11, Mulé said he'd been informed the company no longer had the liquidity to continue, despite what he described as a healthy balance sheet.

On Sunday, Mulé said the impending bankruptcy marks a sad epilogue to his 28 months at the helm, and admitted he felt bitterness and a sense of unfinished business as local news struggles for survival across the country.

The Hamilton Spectator is losing its office space as its owner tries to save money, CBC Hamilton has learned.

It means one of Ontario's longest-running newspapers with roughly 50 editorial staff will no longer have a physical newsroom.

The closure of two long-standing news outlets in B.C.'s northeast this week has some in the community mourning — and others hopeful for creative solutions to fill the gaps left behind.

Glacier Media announced the decision to shutter both Fort St. John's Alaska Highway News and the Dawson Creek Mirror this week, saying in a letter that the papers are no longer sustainable as ad revenue has "shifted heavily to online platforms such as Facebook or Google."

_______

On Tuesday, Kamloops This Week confirmed it is closing its doors at the end of October after 35 years of operations.

"There's really just a lot of cost issues that have accumulated," said Robert Doull, president of Aberdeen Publishing, which owns Kamloops This Week, told CBC News.

"And, Google and Meta have been blocking our links [as a result of Bill C-18] which has reduced our page views by half."

I can see that Bill C-18 is really helping out the press. Idiots in Ottawa.

The press supported it, though.

If they were that reliant on a third-party source to drive traffic to their websites, they were already dead in the water.

The press supported it, though.

Because they thought it would kill the independents....

Correct.

That would sum it up. Imagine, if the papers had been forced to pay private companies to place their private content on their newsprint. That’s the equivalency of what is happening here with Facebook and Google.

The year in review: Thanks for your support throughout 2023

Local media outlets such as the Times Colonist are vital to democracy. Here’s a look at what kept us busy in 2023.

Local media outlets such as the Times Colonist are vital to democracy. Together, we offer the most comprehensive package of quality local information available to you.

This is even more important to note in 2023, given that Merriam-Webster has declared “authentic” as the word of the year and Dictionary.com has gone with “hallucinate.”

They are two sides of the same coin, thanks to the rise of artificial intelligence and the ease of creating fakes. You need authentic sources of information, something real; you need to avoid fakery.

Our primary reason for being is to provide information that informs you, enlightens you and entertains you. We strive to make you aware of what is happening in your community, and even help you decide how to vote.
