How does it work if the developer owns the crane? Does the general contractor give a break on the construction cost to the developer factoring in they won't have to use their own crane?

The general gets the crane for free, but likely has to provide the operator.  Townline got the crane because they acted as their own general on the old department store and were planning to be their own general on Mews, but changed their mind.

OK, I'll bite.  What other tower of rentals has been built lately?

I was going to try and look that up because it seems I've heard the phrase "first rental building in decades" several times in recent years, all referring to different projects.

Well, I'm dwelling on the "tower" part, to narrow any search.

"Tower", so according to the media anything over three storeys?

I think we've gone over the dates in another thread. Sitkum Lodge was completed in 1984. It's 11 floors tall and a rental for seniors. Sandpiper was completed in 1982.

So technically speaking no, Mews is not the first rental tower completed in over 30 years. It is the first rental tower completed within 29 years, however :)

We have SkyscraperPage based right here in Victoria. We could tell you what's what within minutes.

1984 was 30 years ago and 1982 was of course 32 years ago.

From Skyscraper page - all the "towers" (anything under 10 stories likely cannot be argued to be a tower IMO)  constructed since 1980.

Edit: errr posting that table sure didn't work. WTF?

Well I tried to post a fancy table. You can look up and sort the data yourselves. http://skyscraperpag...D=37&statusID=1

30 years ago if finished after Sitkum. Mews is done in March, Sitkum I believe was far later that year. So technically... :)

Well Sitkum is a senior's residence, so not really a full on market rental building, right? Close enough either way!

I don't know what the exact definition of Sitkum's target tenants but it's not a seniors residence with assisted living provisions, that much I think sounds about right.

It's managed by one of the subsidized housing organizations. Baptist, maybe?

I would question the word purpose-built. Didn't these become rental units after they couldn't sell the condos? :-)

I think that $1,225 for a 1 bedroom apartment will be a tough sell.
