And social pot smokers are not toking up during work hours, neither are social drinkers drinking at work. We just have this peculiar attitude towards getting high all day, like it’s normal, or ok. I don’t think it is and friends who were heavy pot smokers have spoken of how had their addiction was when they stepped back and assessed what they were doing and what pot was doing to them.

So back when I had a business, in pre covid times, a pot shop opened across the street. I would routinely see patrons of that shop consuming that product on the street or in their car. Try that with a beer and see what happens.

I'd say attitudes towards smoking weed and driving are similar to having a good time in the bar and feeling good about driving home in the 70's

Now here I agree with you. It's shocking how many people think it's okay to toke and drive. The solution is better enforcement of impaired driving rules. I'm okay with severe penalties for impaired driving.

Big O Tires' new satellite location is open at the corner of Quadra and Pandora. It's called "The Downtown Garage by Big O Tires" and it offers the following features:

  • accessories
  • performance upgrades
  • general auto repairs
  • people sleeping in the doorway at 6 am

By last June, business was booming again—and revving to record growth for the second half of the year.

“We had six record months of almost double the volume,” says Kevin. “We’ve been doing 60 or 70 cars a day, which is incredible, working six days a week and 12 hours a day. That was the biggest challenge.”

To better meet the demand, Big O Tires is expanding to a Pandora and Quadra location, which will mean six more hoists and an additional 20 parking spaces. The Johnson Street location across the road, which was being used as a mechanical repair facility, is also being expanded and will be used as a speed lane for fast flat repairs and quick winter tire changeovers.

“That will give us three locations within a block downtown,” Kevin explains. “That gives us 15 hoists and parking for almost 50 cars.”

The original Quadra location is also being totally revamped, from the ground up. Kevin says they’re investing “quite a bit of money to bring all the shops to the next level.” It could be seen as a big risk or as finding an opportunity amid a crisis.

“Sometimes you just have to take an opportunity and when it comes to the availability of locations and getting a good deal on a lease rate, the opportunities are better in hard times versus when everything is successful. So if you have a few dollars to expand, it makes sense,” Kevin says.

I guess that CERB money also went in to new tires and rims.

It's a great story. Good to see that business owners are investing in downtown. I don't believe the "downtown is dying" worriers.

Yes, good for them. They had intended to expand onto the Ming’s property but I guess were outbid by Starlight?

I’m surprised Capital Bike wasn’t asked to weigh in on this ;) (jk)

Location with parking. Smart move. I used to go on Sundays until parking was no longer free.

Yes this likely a new retail/tasting space now that that have taken over the old driftwood space. Driftwood too has a tasting room coming.

The space on Douglas St just north of Freshii has become a ubreakifix - I think this is a franchise business that repairs electronics (not just cell phones) and small appliances:
