Postal clerk in Tofino, $18.44 per hour. Go wash dishes at any restaurant for five bucks an hour more and get a nice meal to boot.

I don't know, I think the mailman job was considered pretty high-paying back in the day.
I see in 2013 they went to a two-tier wage scale, for newer and older employees.
Back in the 50's the post office was mostly staffed by returning veterans and it was a decent paying job. Our family knew many postal worker families, one income living in VA housing.

Mediation efforts in Canada Post talks suspended as both sides 'far apart on critical issues'
The special mediator appointed to assist in talks between Canada Post and its striking workers has decided to suspend mediation efforts, saying the two sides remain far apart on critical issues.
Federal Minister of Labour Steven MacKinnon says he has requested both parties meet in his office on Wednesday.

The Canada Post strike is expected to continue as parties remain “too far apart on critical issues” to reach a deal, according to Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon.
In a post on X Wednesday, he said the special federal mediator has temporarily suspended his mediation.
.....
He wrote that he has asked the parties to meet at his office, where he will tell them that “they alone” are responsible to find a solution to the deadlock.

On Tuesday, Canada Post said negotiations with the CUPW had come to a grinding halt on important issues.
A special mediator, appointed by the federal government, had been guiding the talks between the two sides since Nov. 18, but the Crown corporation says “progress has been limited to minor items.”
“Canada Post is considering its options to move negotiations forward as talks with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have ground to a halt on key issues critical to the Corporation’s future,” Lisa Liu, a company spokesperson, said in a statement on Tuesday evening.
Liu said the union has not been responding to the proposals that Canada Post has put forward over the past several days and the mailing service was informed by the special mediator that CUPW “will not be responding at all.”
How long until the government steps in? It doesn't sound like they are every going to negotiate their way out of this.

My dad was a postmaster from just after WWII until the early 1970s and during the war, his father had the position. It was a very nice place for people to work back then, esp. in a small town. Lots of female employees in the 1950s. Being a letter carrier was a good job, but that only came into our town in the late 1960s. Before that it was post office boxes. On Christmas Eve my dad never came home until every last parcel was delivered.

Canada Post says it has presented a new framework that it hopes will “reignite discussions” with the union representing 55,000 striking workers.
In a statement Sunday, the Crown corporation said the framework is “comprehensive” for reaching a negotiated agreement with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, whose members walked off the job more than two weeks ago.
“The framework includes proposals to bring greater flexibility to the Corporation’s delivery model, while also demonstrating movement on other key issues,” Canada Post said.
“It is our hope that these proposals will reignite discussions and, together with the support of mediators, help the parties work toward final agreements.”
It added it will not be providing further details outside the negotiation process at this time.

How long does it take for the union to analyze the latest proposal?
I'm not sure they workers have good leadership here.
If the strike is not over sometime next week I presume they have lost their largest revenue month of the year. And us taxpayers just have to write another big cheque to cover them.

Several dozen unionized Canada Post workers along with allies gathered in downtown Nanaimo Saturday to decry the latest offer and to call on their employer to get back to the bargaining table.
They’re among 55,000 Canada Post workers who have been on strike for three weeks as of Friday.
“Yesterday was a very disappointing day. Canada Post’s second offer since mediation stopped was actually worse than the first offer so now we’re going backwards. We’re not accepting that very well,” said Shane Lorenz, President of CUPW Local 786 Central Island East.
