Local Victoria residents and farmers have been beating the drum for some time about culling the deer that are munching their way through their prized gardens and acres of crop land.

It now appears that Parks Canada has been listening to the drumming, and is considering a deer cull on...wait for it...Sidney Island.

The 700 fallow deer have been eating the understory and now there is no place for the bugs that the migratory birds eat... or something to that effect.

Gulf Islands National Park Reserve resource conservation manager Robert Walker says they are looking for input from the public on the proposal.

I didn't know Sidney Island was that big. 100 deer per square kilometre almost. Somewhere around .7 deer per football field-sized space.

Ya, almost 80% private. Neat. It even has a private airstrip. I did not know that until reading about it today. Then again, I've probably seen it while flying over 25x, and saw all the homes, but never connected it to being Sidney Island.

The strata that owns most of Sidney island (privately owned) runs annual deer culls already, the delicious meat is available on some local menus in season and is widely available through Two Rivers Meats out of Vancouver - they distribute on the island as well.

A mobile abattoir is brought to the island for on-site processing.

It's truly over-run with deer. Delicious, delicious deer.

Cranbrook could soon be the first B.C. city to deal with its problem deer by killing some of them.

A YouTube video last year showed a deer attacking a Cranbrook resident’s unleashed dog.

ICBC says the number of claims resulting from deer/auto collisions in the CRD has grown an average of 13 per cent per year for the past decade.

Cranbrook got provincial money for their equipment, but they took two years from start to cull. Province requires these studies before they give up money, plus we don't actually know how many deer there actually are. Cranbrook is killing 25 deer, we will likely need to cull a great deal more.

As a hard core , left wing hippy from Fernwood it might surprise some that I have always been in favour of culling any animals that over populate a city area.
I do a lot of gardening and have deer & racoon problems.

Unfortunately, he seems to be a lousy shot. I firmly believe in a cull, but it's going to take a bigger brain than mine to figure out how to do it in a residential area.

Cranbrook is selling theirs, and the very serious proposal on the table here is for low income people to get it.

As a person who regularly goes up the hump to the shooting range and gets to blast all types of fire arms, I must admit that I would love to do some target practice at my back yard in Fernwood if ya know what I mean.

So people are fair game as well? The world human population needs a cull. Think of all the buildings and roads that destroyed natural gardens and wilderness.
