B.C. Ferries has inked a five-year service agreement with Point Hope Maritime that could pump up to $40 million into the capital region’s economy and support shipyard jobs.

The agreement announced Friday will see the Vic West shipyard on Harbour Road perform regularly scheduled dry-docking, maintenance, repairs and emergency work on eight smaller ferries.

B.C. Ferries has an overall fleet of 35 vessels.

The expansion includes adding 7,700 square meters to the water lot lease.

It should take it's context into consideration if Ian Maxwell wants this approved. It's a VERY prominent location. It's in an urban environment so some aesthetics needs to be considered here. Some quick sketching shoes some simple addition of green space at the edges and possibly a viewing square that links the roundabout visually would do wonders. Hire a landscape architect!

I agree dasmo. I imagine trees around the perimeter would soak up quite a bit of noise too. Any audiologists out there?

They used to say trees were hardly effective at all re: noise as compared to berms and other deflectors. But visually it would obviously make a tremendous difference.

Replacing the engines...no problem...just cut a hole in each hull and slip the new ones in.

That makes it pretty clear why they chose to take a chance on the existing engines rather than replace them off the hop.

I do wonder if they underwent any sort of rebuilding of the engines before setting sail.

Any sort of ship engine or generator has to be overhauled (pulled apart and rebuilt) on a cycle, often every 4 or 5 years or after X number of running hours, in order to be certified by a ship classification agency (Lloyd's on London, American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, etc.). Passenger ships need to be certified to in order to operate, so I would assume this issue is related to a catastrophic and unforeseen failure which destroyed one engine beyond economical repair.

They've had the exterior siding off for many weeks now.  Nice timbers underneath but they've left them exposed until now.  Were they just drying them out prior to applying a new exterior cladding?  The plastic wrap was put on for the prior rainy day.

HMCS Whitehorse heading out...

This was our local Matterhorn for most of the summer.

I have always maintained that the new Johnson Street Bridge could have been refurbished or replaced locally by Point Hope and or Ramsay Machine Works.

Maxwell said workers at United Engineering, another Ralmax company, are carrying out the fine-machining on the steel delivered from China for the new Johnson Street Bridge, getting it ready to install.

Their efforts are “world-class and as fine a work as could be done anywhere — and it’s being done in Victoria,” he said.

A new graving dock at Point Hope Maritime would generate a steady stream of business that would create 200 new trades jobs and support a growing apprenticeship program.

That’s the expectation from Point Hope Maritime, which is staging a public open house at 360 Harbour Rd. on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.

Not only would the project bring jobs, but it would generate many millions of dollars worth of work in Victoria’s Upper Harbour.

Refurbishment can only go so far while still having to maintain operation capability. Replaced though, absolutely, should have been no question. However, free trade agreements basically prevent that, because the lowest bid came from overseas by a large margin. The cost over runs never factor into costing. My concern is that the new bridge design never factored in larger boats pulling into Point hope and thus didn't widen the channel (if they did it is likely negligible).

The best thing about the potential graving dock, is that it would be able to accept all of the Navy ships currently in service as well as those proposed (minus the new Protecteur Class, but only by 9 feet). So the RCN could stop relying on Seaspan (who use a government owned graving dock), and pump money into a solid local company.

It probably could have been, but the city didn't have any say in that

That's comforting, so now we can expect more of the same fiasco on future projects... eh!

Given the treaties that make it almost impossible for the city to control sub-contracting sourcing are provincial and federal, I would say complain to them.
