I asked before, but I'll ask again. Have three sitting councillors ever been ousted from a Greater Victoria council in recent times? Especially surprising since there was no controversy that separated them from the rest.

At least 1996 or futher back. I can only think of one incumbent that was tossed, Chris Coleman and he came back next election. His 4736 in 1999 was just not enough to beat Jane Lunt at 4809.

Thanks to Bernard for archiving past results.

Dean Fortin M 10080 YES

Paul Brown M 4229
Steve Filipovic M 2206
David Shebib M 161

As predicted, Fortin with around 60.5% of the vote.

Wait, why am I not on TV right now prognosticating? :D

And yet Fortin got somewhere close to 3000 votes MORE than last time? I don't get it.

Clearly people are thrilled with the way things are going and they want more of the same. More schemes for burning huge amounts of public money, and more steadfast resistance re: growing the tax base, revitalizing downtown, and otherwise finding innovative ways to get things done.

True, Coleman was bumped off in 99 and David MacLean in 02, but nothing as significant as this. In Saanich, I'm aware of incumbent Ray Williams coming in 12th place in 1999 because of some controversy, I don't recall. I wonder if any of these three will stage a return in 2014?

I recall Saanich councillor Ray Williams getting himself in some trouble years ago but can't recall what it was either so I searched and searched and came up with zilch.

Anyone?

Boy am I glad I live in Langford.

Boy am I sorry I don't. The thing that Langfordians get, that Victorians don't, is something called "economics".

Sad to see Deano re-elected but glad to see Geoff and Shellie did so well.

re change in votes from 2008:

Young +1664
Thornton Joe -1084
Madoff -1696
Coleman +691
Hunter -1825
Luton +341
Lucas -1323

Thanks for posting that - interesting stats. So Luton actually got 341 more votes this time, but it wasn't enough to get re-elected? Madoff dropped by nearly 1700? (Maybe there's hope yet...) Very interesting.

Madoff was traditionally the top vote getter in several elections before being knocked to number two by Thornton-Joe in 2008. This time she's third from the bottom--a stunning drop. Luton won handily in 2008 by a wide margin and improved on that this year but that is was not nearly enough is stunning, too. He must be reeling.

I bet Luton will run again and may win in 2014 if people sour on Councillor Isitt.

Coleman gained nearly 700 more votes this year but was at the bottom this time. And came a few hundred votes from losing. A bittersweet victory for him.

This is the first time since at least 1996 a man has topped the polls for Councillor.

In 1993, the Councillors elected were:

Laura Acton
Geoff Young
Alan Lowe
Helen Hughes
(re- elected)
Pamela Madoff
Bob Friedland
Jane Lunt
David McLean
(newly elected)

Although I don't know in what order the above were popular.

Saanich turnout was approx 25% (up from 21% in 2008), while Victoria turnout was approx 26% (essentially the same as the 27% in 2008). It's interesting to note that Frank Leonard's votes are nearly the same, while the second place candidate received 5000 more votes than in '08. Seems that the increase in voter turnout in Saanich may have been directly related to Cubberley's supporters coming out to vote.

Gudgeon Young Coleman and Thorton-Joe not bad I got half the council I wanted.

CFAX:

Geoff Young 8940 R

Charlayne Thornton-Joe 8803 R

Lisa Helps 8523 R

Ben Isitt 8419 L

Marianne Alto 7493 L

Pam Madoff 7321 L

Shellie Gudgeon 6904 R

Christopher Coleman 6793 R

So we have five right-of-center Councillors (two barely), and a left mayor... interesting.....

I've got Young, Thornton-Joe, Gudgeon and Coleman as the slightly righties.

^Who's the fifth?

Lisa Helps?

On a separate note, it would be amazing if she didn't win. Her name is a campaign slogan.

When you've got unions throwing tens of thousands at your campaign, it's no wonder.

You need to cut out the paranoid "UNIONS UNIONS UNIONS BEWARE!!!!" crap.
I have nothing to do with any unions in my career, and I'm not a giant union fan, but I still know that you're being ridiculous with this.
