Good point Matt. Any grease, fat or oil around will catch fire super quick.

I think Mike thought you meant "somebody is home"; not that it is somebody's house.

I used the apostrophe in the right place...

An elderly couple has lost five pets and most of their possessions after a fire today.
An off-duty Saanich firefighter spotted smoke and flames coming from a two-storey home at 6010 Old East Rd. around 1 p.m. The off-duty firefighter checked to make sure no one was in the house as Saanich Fire rushed to the scene.

A fire dept. supervisor SUV and four fire trucks came out of downtown via Yates, over the JSB, and up Esquimalt Rd.

Visible from downtown apparently, a nearby resident had to head home towards the smoke, luckily was not their building. Looks like it started in the bottom, and flames were visible in the top window. Hydro was just on the scene cutting power to the bldg.
It is the large white house that had one suite for rent if I remember correctly and had those cars in the process of restoration out front.

That is the one ... Looks like flames came out the window on the bottom left behind the tree and could see a flame in the upper left window.

The fire department had to tackle it from the outside, the flames started under the main floor entrance area according to the TC article.

$600k damage, CFAX says.
That does not quite sound plausible. If it burned to the ground it would not be much more than $400k to replace, I'd think.

I spoke with a resident earlier this morning. He said the top floor had had a pretty big fire not that long ago. One resident had just moved in one day before last night's fire.
Several pets died and several are unaccounted for as of this morning. The kitten pictured below was lucky enough to escape unharmed.

100k to demo it first maybe?
