I'm just wondering what the source would have been.

So, not south island (or even BC at this time), but Walmart is set to introduce the "store within a store" concept to select Canadian locations. Dutch retailer HEMA will be opening "stores within a store" through a partnership with Walmart, starting with locations in Ontario. HEMA also plans standalone stores as it expands.

Interesting. The Walmart at Uptown has had an enclosed "store within a store" under construction for a couple months now on the upper level...anyone know what's going in there? The entire upper floor layout has been changed.

I've been trying to figure out what that enclosed space on the second level is going to be for a while now.

Sounds like HEMA Amsterdam will not be the first "store within a store" at Walmart. Chinese retailer Miniso and the UPS Store also have locations inside a brand new Toronto-area Walmart. It has been branded as an "Urban Supercentre."

It better be something amazing, since when we went back to exchange a defective unit they'd moved the blender aisle, and it took me about 5-6 minutes to figure out where the durn things had been moved to.....

On the plus side, Walmart is finally starting to re-stock their upstairs shelves now that everything has found a new home. Still lots of movement in the grocery section downstairs though.

The revamped grocery aisles are pretty ghetto now with their grimy dingy refrigerators they must of bought from some third world country.

A little store selling Chinese goods inside a bigger store selling Chinese goods?  Seems more of a Russian model...

EDIT: The Wikipedia article makes Miniso sound a bit shady.

Nah, simply a tongue in cheek facetious response to NParker's post. Although I must confess it was Mrs ASE who actually discovered the new home of the blender clans and not I, as I'd quickly lost interest in favor of the electronics area....

Because Loblaws got all the free fridges from the Feds.

The 'express lane' cash registers by the doors are gone, replaced with an expanded self checkout area.  Regular cash registers are going from the double-deep arrangement to a single row of cashiers, each with a double output belt ala Superstore.

Does this mean we're going to have to bag our own groceries?

Ever since they started charging for plastic bags if I bring my own I've always had to bag my own stuff.

Uptown or Langford? At Uptown whenever I bring my own bags they just shove the stuff onto the counter thing and I need to bag them myself

Interesting, I rarely actually buy groceries at Wal Mart so maybe that's it? I don't know why they would bag some stuff for you though.
