Reaching the playoffs is huge for the Mariners. I wish them well, but not at the expense of the Blue Jays. Wild card positioning is still in play for all three contenders (Blue Jays, Rays, Mariners). The first WC spot means home field advantage for the first round, Jays are currently in that spot but have yet to clinch it.

Home field advantage in the first round is for the Jays to lose. Should be able to clinch.

 

But the first round is a lose/lose for the Jays either facing the Mariners or Rays. Both teams have winning records this year over the Jays.

With the Blue Jays' win and the Mariners' loss, the former have secured WC1, and will host a wild card series this weekend. Mariners and Rays still have games left to play to sort out which get WC2 (goes to Toronto) or WC3 (goes to Cleveland).

So the Blue Jays got bounced after two games. Disappointing outcome given the lead they had in the second game - multiple things went wrong and they couldn't recover. On the other hand, the Mariners and their long-suffering, playoff-hungry fans will get to have some home playoff games versus the Astros. That series will be a tough match-up.
