From an efficiency perspective, equivalent to a gas car getting 170 mpg
From a cost perspective, equivalent to about 180 mpg
From a CO2 emissions perspective, equivalent to a car getting some 3000mpg
The Leaf is no road trip car but charging network is built out enough that it works alright.

Finding out your hybrid costs more to run on electricity than gas....

One of my favourite things about driving an electric car is driving mountain roads and never having to hit the brakes. Regenerative braking handles everything
Two pedals is boring enough, I can't fathom how depressing it must be to drive by modulating just one.
One of my favourite things about driving an gas car is rev-match downshifting through a twisty canyon road and listening to the sweet boxer rumble from the exhaust.

that's some pretty expensive electricity though.

I have a heavy right foot and I love the regenerative braking.......you start scrubbing substantial speed right away when you lift off.
When Model S brakes are $8500 and I did my BMW 7 series in my driveway for ~$500 I would love regenerative braking too

I think a lot of the gasoline savings quickly disappear when EV's need repair. If someone told me my brakes were going to cost me $8500 I would lose it!

If you are buying an electric car to save money then you are making the wrong decision. What you save on gas on basic maintenance (ie oil change, brake pads, etc) very quickly gets eaten up on major service issues and the eventual battery replacement.

Not really. Saanich charges $.35 / kwh at its charger at Uptown and I would fully expect that once BC Hydro has its 3rd party billing rules updated then everyone else will be selling electricity at a big premium as well.

For the record, the same calculation in BC for the X5 would be:
Electricity: 7 cents/mile
Gas: 23 cents/mile
No contest. Although plug in hybrids with puny 20km ranges are stupid.

All cars are comparatively boring. Motorcycles are the only really fun way to drive mountain roads.
That is a problem with this thread though. A bunch of people that have never driven an electric car trying to fathom what it might be like to drive one.

The article is about an X5, which doesn't support fast charging. Completely irrelevant.
But for the sake of completeness, charging a mythical X5 at 0.35/kWh is still cheaper than driving it using gas in BC.

My first 6 cars I owned were all 5 spd or 6 spd manual and would never buy an ICE without three peddles but for every day driving fun I'll take the Tesla any day over a manual ICE. If I am doing a canyon run I'll take a M2 6spd speed or a 911 7spd manual but for day to day driving the acceleration and traction in the Tesla with the AWD is just insane. Merging onto the highway every day always puts a smile on my face.

Love BMWs but having owned several BMWs they are garbage compared to Tesla in terms of maintenance. I literally had to add oil to my brand new 2014 435i and when I filed a complaint, they said it was "within factory tolerance." I know at least three people personally that had blown turbos on the 335i models.
My new 2012 Civic Si needed a new clutch at 10,000 km due to factory defect and I had another 3 warranty issues before the 60,000 km mark.
Tesla is by far the most reliable car I've ever owned to date. 120,000 km in and I've changed the tires. Also, unlike my previous cars it still feels solid without rattles. My assistant drives my 2012 Civic Si which now has 130,000 km on it and it feels like it is falling apart. I am hard on my cars but the Tesla takes it better than bouncing the VTEC off the redline.
Battery is charging to 99% of new.

BC is targeting 10% of new vehicle sales to be all electric by 2025 (currently around 3%).
Norway is targeting 100% of new vehicle sales to be all electric by 2025 (March 2019 was 58%).

Currently, a Volkswagen Golf costs a Norwegian the equivalent of €31,000, or about $35,000—a price that includes about €11,000 in taxes and fees. By comparison, the fully electric e-Golf sells for €27,000 all-in. Norwegians looking for sportier options could opt for a Tesla Model S for €66,000 ($75,000), which is a steal when compared to the €81,000 ($93,000) it would cost to get a Ford Mustang.
Considering that the per-gallon price of gas in Norway is at least double what it is in the U.S., EVs are no-brainers for most Norwegians.

norway drivers also don't buy pick-ups (20% of our market) and buy lots fewer suvs.

Yup, give it a few more years and EVs will be no brainers in our market too.

I was responding to the OP stating that 0.23/kwh was expensive.
