It’s two different things you’re looking at. They made a profit of $721 million in 2020, thanks to over a billion in those credits they sold. No credits, no profit.

But in a vacuum, it costs them less to build a car than for what they sell it for. However, building something doesn’t include all of the other costs, like research, and shipping.

read this chart:

and tell me if 2020 even matters anymore.  this is going to the moon with 2021 sales.

the north american manufacturers are DOWN last 5 years in a row.  Ford is in no place to catch them in EVs.

So you understand now how the credits make Tesla profitable, at least? You’re getting caught up in the fanboy stuff a bit.

note how 2019 are usually slower Q1 and Q2 than Q3 and Q4.

post-4657-0-44666400-1628022137.png

so what do you think 2021 will end with the gonzo sales already in Q1 and Q2 and the plants already built and paid for that produce those cars?  and with all the profits he is making he is building not one not one but two more gigafactories now.   and the new china gigafactory was not completed until into Q1 of 2021.

credits dropped from $500M to 300M and they are indeed going away.  but the unit profit is huge, those carbon credits don't matter anymore.

When you go from 499,000 units to over 1 million in just one year and every single vehicle is very profitable you are doing great.  if each car only makes $5,000 profit that's $5B profit on "selling cars" in 2021.  in contrast, VW spends over $2,900 per car in advertising.  Tesla spends 60 cents.

I’m not going to dabble in fanboy speculation until I see how many credits they sell by EOY 21.

It’s not unusual to see Teslas and other electric vehicles pulling off the highway into Hope, BC.

After all, there are now more than 30 charging outlets in town, ranging from single and double outlets on city streets to large Superchargers stations.

The newest to come online were the 12 Tesla Superchargers at the Silver Creek Travel Centre, which have been operating for about a month.

Biden is today pushing a $10,000 to $12,500 per electric car subsidy.

'No turning back:' Biden signs order targeting half of all vehicles sold in US to be zero-emissions by 2030

https://www.usatoday...oal/5489643001/

The reference to US manufacturing and union jobs would hint at the “Clean Energy for America” bill introduced earlier this year.

The bill aimed to improve the EV incentive by removing the 200,000 US deliveries per manufacturer and increase the amount to $10,000 for EVs produced in the US and to $12,500 for EVs produced in the US by union workers.

why after so many years do EV's need a taxpayer subsidy to be competitive? And is this the best use of taxpayer $?

ICE factories have just reacted to demand. there is very little demand for electric cars. it’s growing of course, but it’s still mostly insignificant.

If companies are going to be legislated to change to electric they likely will. but it’s hard to just say “50% of your sales must be electric!” It would make more sense to have a hard 100% deadline.

but that’s also difficult.

electric car rebates are not a very effective spend either. in return on air quality or lower emissions. some say they are only 2% effective compared to spending the money elsewhere like on cleaner energy plants.

Tesla did not make the cut for Biden’s electric vehicle summit. They’re the biggest maker of EVs in the world, why would they need to be there?

Musk called it all “odd.” https://twitter.com/...5799683075?s=21

This Twitter comment just about sums it up:

Biden: "I’m standing here because, about 180 years ago, when I first got elected to the Senate, the UAW elected me.  (Applause)."

Biden isn’t a friend of sustainability, he’s a friend of the corrupt UAW. Imagine how we’d lose our **** if it was Trump.

Elon Musk claims Tesla will have 1 million robo-taxis on the road next year, and some people think the claim is so unrealistic that he's being compared to PT Barnum | Business Insider India

Maybe that’s why they didn’t make the cut.

Besides, once you get the enviro credit, do you -really- have to build the car?

Because this was a union event. Biden plans to give an extra $2500 to union made EVs.

every Tesla can become a robotaxi with just a software upgrade though. other EVs can’t.

It was a Big Auto event masquerading as a union event.

But there you go, union made cars cost 25% more, if the subsidy is 25% more, right? To make up the difference and even out the playing field?

Meanwhile starting wages at GM’s US production lines are $17/hour, minus union dues.

Not true. It has to be equipped with the hardware first of all, and now Musk is saying the hardware they sold to future proof cars for autonomous driving likely needs to be upgraded. That’s not going to be cheap, fast, or convenient.
