Tesla, GM, Volkswagen and Ford are among the automakers set to get big orders from Autonomy, a startup offering drivers the option of subscribing to an electric vehicle instead of buying one outright.

Autonomy plans to announce Tuesday that it’s ordering nearly 23,000 EVs from 17 different automakers for a total outlay of $1.2 billion. With chip shortages limiting production capacity at most automakers, it’s unclear how soon such a fleet could be amassed. The order represents 1.2 per cent of the projected US electric vehicle production through the end of next year.

Some deliveries won’t begin until the fourth quarter or early 2023, Scott Painter, Autonomy’s founder and chief executive officer, said in an interview. The Santa Monica, California-based company launched its subscription service in January and currently has 1,000 cars – all of which are Tesla models.

Autonomy:

They pay insurance, registration and routine maintenance.

EDIT:  actually they never mention insurance, so not sure.

Easy and affordable car subscription service.

100% digital. Order your car in less than 10 minutes, and schedule your pickup all from your smartphone. Quite possibly the easiest way to get a car.

Save money without going into long-term debt.

You're not buying a car, so you're not borrowing money. Drive away with none of the long-term debt or interest payments

You pay a start fee and a monthly fee.

I guess it's just a no hassle way to drive a Tesla/electric.

Lots of Canadians rent hot water heaters, or storage lockers.  Makes little sense, but people do it.

The Tesla Model Y has overtaken the Mercedes-Benz GLC as Europe’s best-selling premium midsize SUV over the first half of 2022, pressing home the popularity of the electric crossover.

According to reports late last week referencing preliminary European numbers from German market research firm Dataforce, the Tesla Model Y recorded sales of 41,851 over the first six months of 2022, beating out the GLC which had sales of 40,554.

The numbers represent pan-Europe sales excluding figures from Finland and Portugal.

In third place was the BMW X3 with sales of 31,138 and the Volvo XC60 came in fourth with sales of 27,836.

The ones built for the Chinese market will be $50k, if they build them to North American standards they will be at least double that.

CATL To Build $7.6 Billion 100 GWh Battery Factory In Hungary

At the end of last year, CATL, the world’s largest battery manufacturer, had an annual production capacity of 170 GWh. It has plans to increase that to 670 GWh by 2025, according to Reuters. A major part of that expansion of capacity will come from a new $7.6 billion battery factory to be located on 221 hectares (546 acres) in the Southern Industrial Park in the city of Debrecen in Hungary. The project will supply both cells and modules to European automakers, including Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen, and Stellantis according to a joint press release by the company and officials in Hungary.

As part of its commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of battery manufacturing, CATL will use electricity from renewable energies and will work with local partners to develop solar power and battery material suppliers both locally and throughout Europe.

UK:

Self-driving vehicles could be running on motorways in the next year, the Government has revealed.

Drivers will still need to have a licence so they can take over on other roads.

But by 2025 the aim is for autonomous buses and delivery vehicles to run without the need for a driver.

After the announcement yesterday, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the vehicles would make roads safer, create up to 38,000 jobs and be worth £42 billion. The Government is spending £100million to promote the scheme.

Mr Shapps added: “The benefits have huge potential – improved access to education and other services and the creation of tens of thousands of jobs.

Tesla has launched a membership program and package for those who own electric vehicles that are not Tesla's. This membership package has two parts to it.

The first part is a pay per use. You will pay as you go and use the Supercharger network.

The second is a $0.99 per month membership with access to the Supercharger network and a lower price per kWh.

For every Tesla account, you will be limited to one of the two memberships. You will be able to access the screen in your Tesla account.

I think $0.99 is absurdly low. I think a price of $10 per month for the lower kWh price is more reasonable. One reason Tesla may be offering $0.99 for a lower kWh and membership is to undercut Electrify America, which charges $4.00 per month.

You moving, or just feel like you're there long enough to have a vehicle there?

I have a 2021 Mazda3 in Croatia I bought last summer I will be selling when the Tesla arrives. Already kind of annoying having a gas car, have to take in for an oil change at the 1 year mark, only have 8,000 km on it. Hate going to gas stations and gas in Croatia is super expensive. A number of other reasons, for example a lot of passing in oncoming lane here so a lot of front-end accidents and nothing comes close to a Tesla in front-ender (no engine crushing your legs).

I don't have to worry about the fuel going bad and other non-sense when I am gone. Just leave the Tesla plugged in in my garage and I can make sure everything is alright using the Tesla app as it is always connected.

Finally CND hitting a 10 year high against Euro so Model Y ends up being cheaper than in Canada when traditionally cars are 30 to 40% more expensive in Croatia versus Canada.

When you've had a bulletproof Tesla for 7 years, 230,000 km, free supercharging, kind of hard going back to ICE I've learned.
