This isn't at all a critique of anyone on VV but more of a comment on broader society, and what - and who - we value: but I really must read up on and delve into the psychology of why many people are so fascinated by what I term the cult of "celebrity". Personally I generally care not one whit which is why I won't be braving the traffic and the parking restrictions and the enthralled hordes to gain a faint glimpse of WIlliam-Kate-the kids-Justin & Family et al.

Might as well line up for a look as you are paying for it anyways. Apparently seven figures to the Victoria taxpayer to host the glimpse.

If anyone I would have expected Helps to say 'you know what, we would rather spend the money on our own issues'. Instead she seems to have forgotten about her distaste for the Royal family at swearing in and is now fawning over them like everyone else.

I think 7 figures is the entire cost for 8 days all over the province.

Now, just the 1000 reporters alone coming to Victoria will drop $2M in our city.   There were dozens and dozens of them, plus other British officials at the Sticky Wicket last night having some pints.

You can bet lots of tourists are coming here from the mainland and US too.

I would entirely support the Sticky Wicket contributing to the cost of the visit! :-)

The Royal Family is extremely wealthy, most of the people they are dining and meeting with are extremely wealthy, yet it is the schmuck fighting for a spot on the sidewalk so that he/she can get a glimpse of the family as they are escorted by that foots the bill.

A small example of how the rich get richer and the poor get poorer in our society.

The Royals do not trademark themselves.  You are free to make all the money you want off them by making t-shirts, dolls, posters etc.  I think that's great.

The ROI will more than cover any costs. The exposure to Victoria will be unprecedented, this is the first trip for the babies, that alone will generate global interest.

I'm not a fan of the royals but am a fan of the institution and respect the devotion of the Queen and the example she sets.I think William and Harry are good role models for our younger generation. You cant call Harry a leech in any respect and there isnt an arrogant bone in either of them. Living in a goldfish bowl since the day you were born is more a curse than a luxury.

Even when he is not doing official public duty he works with air ambulance and donates 100% of his wage to charity. I dont know what more they could do to appease the naysayers

I would imagine this will increase a good deal by later this afternoon, especially if the skies clear a bit. Is there a website where one can watch the action  - or lack thereof - ahead of the arrival? I know come 4:00 pm CHEK will have a lot of coverage. I might even set my PVR.

In any case that red carpet makes a nice contrast with the green of the legislature lawn. It should photograph nicely.

All the *****ing about the costs of maintaining the monarchy are hilarious. It's incredibly cheap to have a monarchy versus a republic. It's also far superior to have a head of state who is not part of our society. Our monarchs are not swayed by popular culture to make decisions.

CTV has very strong coverage starting at 5pm.  I think CHEK is deferring to CBC, no?

I was under the impression CHEK would have access to both the CBC feed (airport?) as well as their own coverage from the legislature. I might have to channel surf to get the best coverage.

I am concerned that the yellow flowers will clash with Kate's outfit.

City crews have gone above and beyond the call of duty in preparing the flower beds.

Too bad light bulb maintenance missed at least 36 burned out ones on the front of the parliament buildings.

The media are there in full force in addition to the VV photographers.

Watch for the interview on Global to hear who this Canadian rugby legend may have coached.

I would imagine she has been informed of the most appropriate colours to wear and likely has several options depending on the weather. I assume there is both a costumer and hairdresser on the plane with the royals, to ensure as each member disembarks they look suitably groomed for the horde of photographers. These images will sell a lot of newspaper and assorted other media space so I doubt much is left to chance.

Just passed a convoy of black SUVs with flashing lights following a white van near the airport. Guessing it's Trudeau.

What a waste of carpet

It gets re-used.

They don't want anybody walking on it with their shoes on. I think they have a supply of slippers.

Now that I think about it, it will be important that Sophie, Christie and Judith have been given a head's up regarding Kate's outfit. As for Her Worseship, let's just hope she's brushed her hair.
