As Phoenix gets ready to host the Super Bowl, Mayor Kate Gallego announced Friday that Sky Harbor International Airport will be the first to offer the self-driving ride-hailing service Waymo.

“The future is here,” Gallego said at a news conference in front of the airport’s sky train station. “Phoenix is the first airport anywhere in the world to have autonomous service bringing people to our airport.”

Looks like it operates in two neighbourhoods in Phoenix. A start. I wonder if they still need to have a driver as backup or if this is fully autonomous?

It'll take exactly one accident - and the subsequent massive parade of lawsuits - to put an end to that program.

You have to sign a waiver before it drives off.

I don’t think so. Planes crash and many people die. Often airlines survive fine.

There have been accidents involving self-driving cars before, including at least one fatality.

MIAMI — Uber Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: UBER) and Cartken, a leading robotics company, today announced a new partnership for food deliveries via automated robots in Miami, Florida. Uber Eats consumers in Miami will have the opportunity to have orders delivered by Cartken’s self-driving robot.

Starting today, Uber and Cartken will begin operating with select merchants in the Dadeland area of Miami-Dade County with plans to expand in Miami-Dade and to additional cities in 2023. Cartken’s AI-powered sidewalk delivery robots currently are used for neighborhood food and grocery delivery, campus meal delivery and curbside pickup across the country. Uber Eats will be its first formal partnership with a global on-demand delivery app beyond college campuses.

Uber Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: UBER) and Cartken, a leading robotics company, today announced a new partnership for food.

“We are excited about how this partnership with Uber will bring the advantages of robotics to food delivery—and ultimately create more connected communities,” said Christian Bersch, Co-founder and CEO at Cartken. “Together, we have the opportunity to reduce traffic congestion, help local merchants to increase delivery capacity, and bring consumers fast, convenient, and emission-free deliveries.”

^ Ha! I wonder how long one of those puppies would last on the sidewalks of downtown Victoria?

You know. If there isn’t a lot of reward compared to risk, they will be fine.

Ride-hailing giant Uber did not get the Christmas present it was hoping for and Victoria residents will not get the chance to use their Uber apps this holiday season as the Passenger Transportation Board has yet to make a decision on Uber’s application for a licence transfer.

While the board released a flurry of decisions Wednesday in its weekly bulletin, Uber’s application was not among them.

Good grief. Just get on with it already. We have a serious under-supply of taxis in this region, and a lot of areas where calling a taxi means waiting for an hour or more.

^ The article isn't entirely correct as Kabu also operates in Victoria.

Many taxis, ride-share vehicles not operating in poor road conditions

Many taxi drivers aren’t leaving their homes right now; others are having trouble navigating streets that remain unplowed, says B.C. Taxi Association head

Ride-hailing giant Uber is still not available in Victoria, but the company's "Uber Rent" service has arrived in B.C.'s capital.

Uber Rent lets users rent a car from a range of car rental companies, like Budget, Hertz and Avis, through the Uber app.

https://vancouverisl...toria-1.6389333

To use the Uber Rent function on its app, which has just launched in Victoria and Kelowna:

Open your Uber app and tap the "Rental Cars" icon.
Enter the address that your rental car pick up/drop off will be near and the times and dates that your reservation will start and end.
Browse vehicles and compare prices. You can pay in advance to save money or pay at the rental location.
Go to the rental location with your driver’s license and credit card at the time referenced in your reservation in the Uber app.
When your reservation is over, return your vehicle to the selected location.

Popular ride-hailing service Uber has been approved to operate in Victoria.

The company had previously applied to operate in B.C.'s capital, but was rejected by the Passenger Transportation Safety Board (PTB).

About time. Friends and family visiting Victoria are always shocked to hear we don’t allow Uber.

Didn’t the bc government originally say they were disallowing it because it would cause traffic congestion or something silly? I wonder what’s the real story there.
