Believe it or not, this incident was NOT at 844 Johnson, but rather at 834 Johnson. Reports were the second floor, which is the floor that has the subsidized units in the building.

I am not convinced adding subsidized units to market housing has proven to be a resounding success. IIRC, this is not the first such incident at 834.

🚔BC Transit bus driver assaulted, robbed in Central Saanich🚔

Central Saanich Police officers arrested a male after receiving a report of a robbery of a BC Transit driver last night at Keating Cross Road and Central Saanich Road.

At approximately 8:00 pm a male passenger in his 30s approached the bus driver and after assaulting him demanded the driver’s wallet. The driver was uninjured physically during the incident.

“A suspect was located shortly after receiving the report with the assistance of several members of the public,” said Deputy Chief Derren Lench.

Jordan David Tahouney, a 33 year old male appeared in court today and was charged with Robbery, Section 344 of the Criminal Code of Canada. He will remain in custody until his next court appearance.

Any witnesses who have not spoken to the Central Saanich Police Service are asked to contact our office at 250-652-4441.

True, but lots of incidents also happen in non-subsidized housing. I don’t think that has much to do with anything. Having been a past resident at The 834, I always found that building to be a model of how to incorporate subsidized housing into a neighbourhood. As in, don’t put full buildings full of vulnerable people where problems can just compound. By putting these units into buildings with strong stratas, problems always seems to be minor as there is a level of heightened responsibility. One of the previous ‘newsworthy’ incidents you may be referring to at The 834 was a drug incident that was in one of the non-subsidized units. Lots of drug dealers have nice condos.

Drug dealers will typically rent (not buy) nice condos from landlords who don’t mind getting cash in lieu of a cheque.

Bring it on!

⚠️BREAKING: Thefts From Vehicles Up 30% Overall, 236% In Rockland⚠️

Victoria, BC - Crime prevention efforts are being redoubled after crime analysts with VicPD’s Analysis and Intelligence Section confirmed that thefts from vehicles are up significantly over last year.

Overall, thefts from vehicles in VicPD’s jurisdiction are up 30% from 2018.

Of particular concern to officers is that thefts from vehicles have risen significantly in certain neighbourhoods. For example, Rockland has seen a 236% rise in reports of thefts from vehicles.

Thefts from vehicle are up in all but three communities. Harris Green, Downtown and the Township of Esquimalt all saw drops in theft from vehicles.

Rockland, North Jubilee and Fairfield saw the largest percentage with increases of 236%, 118% and 115% respectively.

Thefts from vehicles remain a VicPD Operations Council priority. Where possible, Patrol officers continue to patrol areas showing significant theft from vehicle numbers. VicPD Crime Watch volunteers are out in the most impacted communities conducting Lock Out Auto Crime patrols, reminding area residents to not leave valuables behind in vehicles. VicPD Block Watch Captains are also being asked to remind their participants to remove valuables from their vehicles.

“Our belief is that many of these thefts from vehicles are being committed by a small group of prolific offenders,” Chief Constable Del Manak said. “We are keeping the public updated on crime trends in their neighbourhoods so that they can work with us to reduce the likelihood of victimization. That’s why we are asking people to remove valuables from their vehicles to reduce the likelihood of these crimes occurring in the first place.”

Preventing thefts from vehicles has been an VicPD Operations Council Priority for the last five months. Previous and continuing crime prevention efforts have included Lock Out Auto Crime patrols by VicPD Crime Watch volunteers, proactive patrols by Patrol officers where call volumes allow and significant community engagement with our VicPD Block Watch captains and volunteers, partnerships with local media and the production of a brief video demonstration of how quickly valuables can be stolen from your vehicle.

Thefts from vehicles are often crimes of opportunity that tend to happen during later hours. Being part of the “9 p.m. ritual” of ensuring all valuables are removed from your vehicle after 9 p.m. at night can help prevent these thefts. A large portion of thefts from vehicles occur after dark.

For more information on what you can do to help prevent yourself and others from falling victim to thefts from vehicles, please visit https://vicpd.ca/preventautocrime.

If you see someone looking into or trying door handles of vehicles, please call 911. D5F4967E-7180-4272-BAB7-628C858FA11A.png

Thank goodness Ben and his army of followers are keeping that police budget down. Those Rockland-dwelling vehicle owners deserve it. :) #ben2022

🚔Cash, Suspected Drugs, Loaded Shotgun and Numerous Other Weapons Seized in Esquimalt Raid🚔

Victoria, BC – Officers are continuing their investigation into an alleged drug dealer operating in the area of Ecole Victor Brodeur.

In July, officers in our Patrol Division began their investigation into an Esquimalt man after community complaints about suspected drug dealing. Officers completed a very detailed investigation and on August 26, with the start of school less than a week away, officers applied for and were granted a search warrant for the man’s residence in the 600-block of Head Street.

On August 27, officers with our Strike Force Unit and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team assisted with the arrest of the man, and the subsequent search of the residence. The man was arrested, without incident, shortly after 5:00 p.m. in the 100-block of Wilson Street. The man was found to have a hand gun, ammunition, several knives, and other evidence on his possession. Officers then conducted the search warrant at the residence where a woman was arrested. The search of the residence revealed various amounts of suspected drugs, cash, a loaded shotgun, several replica firearms, and various other weapons including a taser and a crossbow.

10 charges are being recommended to Crown Counsel, and the man is set to appear in court today. Additional charges are likely in the coming weeks as officers process all exhibits which were seized.

On Tuesday morning I was at the McDonald’s on Oak Street just a stone’s throw from this gas station. I’ve never been accosted sitting in a vehicle in a parking lot for money and cigarettes before, but repeatedly I kept getting approached as I sat in my track responding to emails. The whole scene was very off putting and the vibe felt dangerous/on edge.

The parking area had a half-dozen individuals loitering outside, about four of which I recognized as familiar characters from downtown Victoria’s street scene.

And nary two days later there’s a stabbing over a smoke. Good God.

🚔Refusal to hand over a cigarette results in stabbing at Uptown Shell station🚔

At about 1am on August 29, 2019, a 29 year old man and a 33 year old woman went to the Shell gas station at the corner of Douglas Street and Saanich Road, and bought cigarettes. As they were leaving with their purchase, a 25 year old man, who was not known to the couple, approached and asked for a cigarette. When they refused, an argument ensued and the suspect punched the woman in the face. Her boyfriend stepped in to stop the assault and in doing so, was stabbed by the suspect.

Saanich Police officers were quickly on the scene and located the injured man and woman nearby at the Red Lion Inn. The man was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, where he remains. The woman suffered minor injuries which did not require hospitalization.

The suspect was located in the Shell parking lot and arrested. He remains in police custody with an expected court appearance later today. Police will be recommending three charges, including Aggravated Assault, Assault and Robbery.

Punching a woman in the face and then stabbing someone? Jesus. But, I know, not a bad person, merely desperate.

Crown prosecutor Patrick Weir wound up five days of intense, detailed cross-examination by revealing for the first time the chilling details of what he believes happened in Berry’s apartment that morning and why.

Berry disagreed with everything Weir outlined.

“Mr. Berry, I’m going suggest to you that in your world, in your mind, by the end of Dec. 24, life had become hopeless and unbearable for you and you decided to take your own life. Do you agree or disagree with that?” Weir said.

Berry disagreed.

The CoV really needs to step-up its efforts to make Centennial Square safer. Less about protecting a tree and more about protecting citizens....OK?

So negative always. Why not praise the fact that the Pandora bike lane probably made his escape more efficient and safer?

Unlikely if he went West, the new Wharf lanes have created a hazardous choke point.
