Berry said his gambling problem began in 1997 when he was working as a bellman at Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver. He began playing baccarat, with big wins and losses.

In January 2017, Berry told the court, he took $10,000 to the River Rock casino but lost the money. That night, he borrowed $10,000 from Paul, a 50-year-old man he had known for years.

He said he promised to pay Paul $2,000 a week in interest. Berry said he didn’t know Paul’s last name.

Berry said he lost the $10,000 he borrowed from Paul and began trying to figure out how he would pay back the loan shark.

He told Paul he would resign and use his pension fund from B.C. Ferries, but it would take some time.

“When I got home a couple of days later, a rock came through my window and I got a call from Paul asking if I’d got his present,” Berry testified.

Paul was calling him every week. Berry told him he was trying to work it out. Paul was frustrated, Berry testified.

The debt increased to $25,000 to be paid by the end of June. Berry was asked to store a bag in his apartment. He said he agreed because he “was in a desperate place.”

Throughout 2017, Berry continued trying to repay Paul. He visited his sister twice, asking her for $25,000 from his pension fund to repay the debt, but she would only give him $10,000 the first time and $8,000 on his second visit. Because his sister is a Mountie, Berry felt unable to tell her about his predicament, he testified.

He continued to gamble and continued to lose. Berry was asked to store a second package in his apartment, but this time he had to give the loan sharks a spare set of keys to his apartment.

There should be lots of phone records to match all these phone calls.  The landlord should have records that they replaced the window when it was broken by the rock, unless the rock came through an open window.

This story is all made up in my opinion.

the defence is not obligated to turn over phone logs. that would be up to the crown to already have them by now. if not it’s too late.

VicPD’s servers can’t handle the traffic load when they send out a release so their site can be down for some time after news breaks. It can be a little frustrating as you’re trying to get content from the actual site but it won’t load.

West Shore RCMP have a bait bike program? That’s pretty good.

What surprise me here is the thief was 49-years-old.

Bait Bike Arrest in West Shore

The West Shore RCMP Bike Unit have recently been involved in investigating the theft of several high end electric bicycles in the West Shore. The mandate of the Bike Unit is to target chronic property crime offenders and prolific offenders in the West Shore.

On August 21, 2019 the West Shore RCMP deployed a GPS equipped bait bike in the area of the West Shore Town Centre in Langford. Several Bike Unit officers were able to track the thief and make an arrest. Upon arrest, the suspect male provided a false name but officers were able to identify him through a fingerprint search. The accused 49 year old Trevor Thurston was held in custody for a court appearance at Colwood Provincial Court on August 22, 2019 charged with Theft Under $5000, Obstruct Peace Officer and Fail to Comply with Recognizance.

"Police are using high tech tools to capture property crime offenders in the West Shore including deploying bait bikes and vehicles. We will use all our resources and technology at West Shore RCMP to quickly apprehend criminals," says Constable Alex Berube, Bike Unit West Shore RCMP.

Police say the death of a man found lying in a pool of blood in a Saanich driveway is no longer considered suspicious.

The body of Victoria man Andrew Michael Sidor, 30, was found Saturday outside a home near the intersection of Crease Avenue and Wascana Street.

Police and emergency personnel responded to the area and initially deemed the death suspicious due to the nature of the man's injuries.

Police later issued a public plea for help finding Sidor's shoes and backpack, which were eventually located.

On Thursday Saanich police said Sidor's death "did not involve foul play" and declined to comment further.

In the manhunt thread you mentioned how the police should have gone public with whatever info they had sooner, but here is a scenario where they did just that and yet you're still complaining.

So what is it exactly that you're looking for from police?

Nice.
I think they should use higher value bikes. Nab them on theft over 5k.

accuracy.  consistency.  and most of all sharing as much information as they can.  even when it hurts a bit.  especially when they ask for public help.

don't say "we won't be sharing anything further" then also tell us "tsk tsk don't speculate on social media".

Berry also talked a bit about why he quit his job at BC Ferries in May 2017, offering a slightly different version of events than he has previously.

On Wednesday, he testified he was desperate for a source of money to pay back his $25,000 gambling debt, and the only option was to cash out his pension.

On Thursday, he told the court that when he quit his job, "I had just decided to gamble and win enough money to go away with the girls."

Mr. Berry would be more convincing if he could display one stab wound that he could not have physically made.

Hmmmm... Victoria's most long running chop shop (aka Tent City) received a mayor's award and police were instructed to stay out of there... then Ben and his interns did everything possible to curb law enforcement... is it possible that the CoV government is unintentionally sending out signals that bike theft is a valuable local industry and not a criminal enterprise?

We heard that a couple months before the murders, that the mother sent an email to a friend where she said that "My gut tells me he's in a very bad place and may have people after him, re: gambling debts."

I don't think it's as far fetched as it sounds.  Loan sharks like "Paul" certainly do exist in our community and people like Berry are exactly the sort of people they target.

....And in the absence of information of someone fleeing the scene, Harward did not cordon off areas around the outside of the apartment building for processing.

Harward told the courtroom that based on his assessment of the points of entries, he did not believe that there would be any fingerprints found on scene that did not belong to Berry, Aubrey or Chloe. ....
