As far as I’m concerned they have the right to overdose.

As long as they wear a mask?

Interesting.

Meanwhile the mayor is asking that the public not photograph the encampments or the people within. It would see that there is a connection here.
.

Yes this does fit her normal modus operandi. She’s infuriating and maybe that’s part of the plan too. The more infuriated we are, the more pressure we will out on the province to deal with the problem. In the meantime though the divisiveness she is creating knows no bounds. No way she can claim innocence of this anymore.

it reminds me of a few years back where there was open drug deals going on downtown on the street and when someone contacted the mayor and police they just ignored it so they went around with a video camera and recorded it..it ended up on facebook, then ended up on news reports and the embarrassment of that caused them to finally step up and chase the dealers back into the shadows and to start being more covert again (not standing openly in street view on the sidewalk selling)

we as a community should not have to shame our mayor and council to do the right thing... to me the current petition about camping in beacon hill park is again a way to shame the mayor and council to step up... and even when we're at over 16,000 people signed they still won't close the park to camping (only try to politely move them)

Oak Bay police are asking for help in locating 22-year-old Jessica Peeling.

She was last seen June 26 at her south Oak Bay residence. Her caregiver called police July 10.

Police said it is not unusual for Peeling to leave for extended periods, and that she frequents downtown Victoria.

“As an adult, we fully respect her right to come and go as she pleases, but we just want to ensure that she’s OK,” said Oak Bay Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties.

as a (limited mental capacity) adult we are cool with her running away. we will just put her name and photo all over the Internet for her own good. since she’s been gone for 20 days.

How large is our local Hispanic population anyway?

I am not sure (although the stats are likely available somewhere), but I suspect it's larger than our local African-Canadian population.

If you dig through here you can probably find ethnic background information for Victoria.

A man who tried to run down his ex-girlfriend and her new partner outside her Rockland-area home four years ago will be released from jail in 10 days, after serving the equivalent of a 3 1/2-year prison sentence.

On Friday, Sebastien Normandin, 50, pleaded guilty in Victoria provincial court to two charges of aggravated assault.

____________________

Judge Adrian Brooks accepted a joint submission from Crown and defence asking for two 42-month sentences to be served concurrently, followed by three years of probation.

During the sentencing hearing, no mention was made of the fact that Normandin fled to France after being released on bail in May 2017, was arrested the following year and was extradited to Canada last fall.

____________________

Normandin was originally charged with two counts of attempted murder, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, criminal harassment and assault of his ex-girlfriend in 2014 and assault causing bodily harm to her in 2015. Those charges have now been stayed.

in the end all the fuss hardly seemed worth it.

Not Victoria (maybe) but still a weird local story. I remember when this happened, locals were going bananas.

Salt Spring is sort of Victoria... close enough to not want the Red Army training there, anyway.

Why does Crimestoppers use the stupid term "700 block of Hillside" in this dine-and-dash story when the only restaurant on that block is Boston Pizza? And why is the Victoria News too scared to mention it either? What's the benefit of withholding this vital piece of the puzzle? Shame?

it's 2020 dude.  naming the victim is re-victimizing them all over again.  do you have no compassion?

how do you get 8 of your friends together to pull off a caper like this?

Why are 9 people dining out together right now? Why did Boston Pizza not take (at least one of) their names and phone numbers for contact tracing purposes, like they're supposed to be doing right now?

Either they all felt they got bad service and decided to dash as a group or they thought one person was taking care of the entire bill and that person either bailed or forgot.

While I'm on a rant, what's the point of having expensive video cameras with state of the art optics if the only time they're used to solve a crime, they use a cell phone photo of the screen (taken at an angle) of a still frame?

they use proprietary video technology (not standard mp4 or similar files) and nobody except the top forensic expert at the police department knows how to remove/convert it probably.  and they are not doing that for dine/dash cases.

^Are you joking? Because that's not how it works? You can export any frame at a decent resolution.

Pretty sure it's illegal to publish photos of alleged criminal offenses being committed for privacy reasons.

Straight up HD mp4 exports on my system. Also, there is no requirement to collect names if it’s not already part of your usual routine.
