Great comments Aastra. I really dislike how many large scale developments we seem to have going on. I get it from an economic perspective and I get it from a housing perspective from an actual on the ground city perspective, they are the worst. We really should be putting focused policy into master plans to ensure that there is differentiation, however even with that it will never beat out just plain old individual builds.

I think the Capitol Iron redevelopment has the potential to go wrong re: not heeding the granularity that people like in the old town/Chinatown area.

Methinks Mermaid Wharf, The Janion, and The Pearl did not get the memo re: all new condo buildings must look the same.

That's a wonderful pic of the "Triplets of the Victorian Riviera," aastra!
I'd like to nudge that "Riviera" does mean "coastline" (by some definitions), which is in keeping w/ this developing & unique, waterfront community!
Can we make Riviera stick?!

Can we make Riviera stick?
On this board? I doubt if we can make riviera stick, but I bet we can make some riviera shtick. For example: any truth to the rumour that Geraldo will be at the grand opening of the Pearl?

What's so great about the riviera, anyway? I've heard people say it's just a poor Tofino.

aastra, have you never been there? If not, it is time to travel although you will never see Victoria in the same way.

poor Tofino = Portofino (Italian riviera)
(For the record, yes, I have been there. As I say, it was Nice.)

When it comes to clever and hilarious plays on words, sometimes I feel like I'm casting the Pearl before swine.
I'll clam up now.

I'll clam up now.
In closing I'll just say this: Monaco is actually a Rainier place than poor Tofino.
After that remark I can exit with Grace.

Frankly, I think brickwork simply looks better than almost anything else when it is done right.

I gotta say, I wish those balcony railings had a bit of "old town" character. Or a bit of any kind of character.

From the street side, the Pearl really pales in comparison to the surrounding buildings. The balcony railings are also very unsightly and obtrusive. I like the previous glass barriers for the balconies a lot better.

It certainly isn't going to have the eye-catching panache of the historic sloping asphalt parking lot, that's for sure.
