Yeah, he does not seem like the kind of person you'd put in charge if you were trying to establish credibility as a serious journalistic outlet. The petty, unsophisticated, adolescent social media antics don't instill great faith.

Today he is feuding with Stirling, denying that council has any desire to defund the police. It's really something to see him gallantly rushing to council's defense over this. At least he isn't trying to disguise who he works for, I guess. But let's drop the "journalism" act, shall we?

Agreed. He is one angry dude. I think at some point Andrew is going to realize that the Capital isn't going to become a global juggernaut and replace MSM so he will shut it down.

We're expanding our coverage to the Westshore!
You live in the Westshore for a reason.

Maybe you moved here for the bigger houses, the great schools, the fast-paced growth. Maybe you’ve always lived here. But there are more and more people like you, and we want you to know we see you.

We’re launching a newsletter soon that’s specifically for you: The Westshore. It will take on the stories specific to this part of the Island, from transportation and development to lifestyle, crime, politics, and arts. It will be tapped into the diverse communities of the Westshore. And it will be in your inbox every Tuesday and Thursday.

We know you care about your community—you wouldn’t already be getting Capital Daily if you didn’t. Now we’re putting a magnifying glass on your city, your neighbourhood, maybe even your street, taking a closer look at communities that have been starved for coverage for years.

How is the capital daily funded?

by a "billionaire" investor.

https://www.cnbc.com...ding-debut.html

If you haven’t heard of Andrew Wilkinson, then let me introduce you. Wilkinson is the founding CEO of Tiny Capital, a long-term holding company for businesses that specializes in acquiring majority or whole stakes in “profitable, simple, and often boring” internet companies. He’s the college dropout behind a multi-million-dollar success story; the man who thinks of himself as the tech equivalent of Warren Buffet. He’s the Victoria, BC, resident with the mindset of a Silicon Valley whiz kid. He’s the CEO who wants every sale, every acquisition, and every deal to be signed, sealed, and delivered in 30 days flat. He’s the businessman sat at the helm of an empire comprising of over 30 companies with a combined value of between C$600 million ($471 million) to C$1 billion. In short, he’s someone you need to know more about. Do just that with these ten things you didn’t know about Andrew Wilkinson.

https://moneyinc.com/andrew-wilkinson/

Wilkinson’s education is a world away from where he’s eventually ended up in life. After graduating from Oak Bay High School in 2004, he won a place at Ryerson University studying journalism.

I won't double post here since it is already in the Langford thread, but they are definitely not viewing the Westshore in a good light.  It could be that the Westshore population is now big enough to support the SJW and eco-warrior crowd, or something more strategic linked to the various political entities at UVIC.

Sounds like the BC Liberals had the wrong Andrew Wilkinson at the helm.

Grey whales are swimming by Vancouver Island right now on their seasonal migration to Alaska

The species has a long history with Indigenous peoples and settlers alike

https://www.capitald...ancouver-island

During the creatures’ time spent on the endangered species list, which was also during the heyday of marine parks like Sealand in Oak Bay (closed in 1993), many settlers discovered a great love for these intelligent mammals.

A western scientific understanding of these creatures has rapidly developed in the last half century to allow settlers and non-whaling nations to grasp the scope of what was lost, and what is still at stake.

We've surpassed 50,000 subscribers!

It’s official, Capital Daily has surpassed 50,000 subscribers and counting, and that’s a BIG DEAL. This means 1 out of 7 people living in Greater Victoria are a part of this community, and open our newsletter on a daily basis.

In the last year, we’ve grown 300%, hired nearly 10 full-time reporters and editors, raised $150,000 for charity, and published hundreds of local stories. Oh, and let’s not forget that Capital Daily investigative reporter Tori Marlan is up for not 1 but 2 national journalism awards.

Today we’re also unveiling our refreshed branding and logo, which you might have noticed opening this email.

Our community is what makes us, so when creating our new logo, we took our inspiration from 2 things: the beautiful ocean that surrounds our region, and you! Our amazing supporters. So you may see the sun setting on the ocean... OR you may see someone reading a book or newspaper. Some people have even said they see the front of a ferry boat, too! Let us know if you see anything else in there.

^ Not sure about that. Most of the advertising is still by companies that Andrew or Tiny own or in kind (ie SIPP). With 50K subscribers you would think that they would be better able to monetize the newsletter.

Statistics Canada estimates Greater Victoria's population at 408,833 so they are at 1 out of 8. Does Capital Daily use a different kind of math than was taught in school?

The key metric is newsletter openings/readership, which averages 20%.

Newsletter are also tough, in that you can be doing everything right but algorithm changes will send your newsletter strait to the junk or spam folder from one day to the next, and you don't have much control over that.

Wednesday evening was Capital Daily’s inaugural Community Council session, featuring a panel discussion on housing and zoning in Greater Victoria past, present, and future.

These Community Council events are available to members, and we’re planning on bringing you more discussions on important topics that affect our community in the future. Consider becoming a member so you don’t miss out on our next event. But for now, here’s a brief recap of our first Community Council.

The event was led by Capital Daily’s community manager Emmalee Brunt and managing editor Jimmy Thomson, with speakers Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps, former councillor Pamela Madoff, Dr. Runa Das from Royal Roads University, South Jubilee Neighbourhood Association president Matt Dell, and Mark Holland from VIU sharing their expertise and views.

Over 60 Capital Daily members attended the information-packed event. Thank you again to the panelists for their expertise, and thank you to the amazing audience for their thoughtful questions.

^ Ya....I'm not a fan of these pay for access to news and and pay for access to community discussions, especially when they promote the idea that everything that people need is a right, and not something that in all fairness needs to be worked very hard for.

Lisa's new kick is that single family residential zoning should be abolished and blanket multi unit zoning be established in order to negate the need for municipal oversight. Couple that with removing the requirement for onsite parking and we are about to clog this city like nobody's business.

Text book politics will never solve the natural balance of supply and demand.

Increasing supply will never solve the housing shortage in one of the most sought after locations in Canada.

Quit trying to find an unsolvable solution with identity politics....no matter how inclusive you try and make it.

What exactly is to be gleaned from a former city councillor who was the single most-anti housing force on council for an entire generation?

And if the people who put these events on knew how the fight for housing began, they would have Rob Randall and G-Man at their events, not instructors at RRU or VIU.

The history of the movement for more equitable development began right here, and it laid the foundation for the entire narrative changing. Had it not been for what VV started, can you imagine where this city would be today?

Just what we need, decisions that instantly generate wealth for developers and property owners should be made by anonymous, unaccountable staffers. No risk there.
