In the year since he became partially paralyzed, Ross Wightman has kept his focus on small victories — from getting up the stairs unassisted, to going for a solo walk near his rural B.C. home.

But the biggest win came in the form of an e-mail from Canada's Vaccine Injury Support Program (VISP) that confirmed something he says he knew all along: that his condition was likely caused by the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

Now the payouts begin for those injured and killed by the vaccines.

There will be no payouts for those injured and killed by the disease. Only for those lives permanently harmed - or ended - by the very “cure” (or at least safe protection) we were promised.

A payout and income replacement? Ridiculous.

He made the choice to take an experimental vaccine. He should live with the consequences.

The funniest thing is since he only had one dose he’s barred from flying or train travel in Canada. Why not just do the right thing and suck it up and get a second dose? It’s safe and effective

There have been 10 reports of individuals hospitalized with GBS within 30 days of a COVID-19 vaccine since December 2020, all of whom have been discharged, according to the BCCDC. Four reports followed the AstraZeneca vaccine, five followed Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty, and one followed Moderna Spikevax.

Oh my.

Was this disclosed before?

Know it all.

The letter Wightman received makes him one of just a handful of Canadians to become approved for a COVID-19 vaccine injury benefit. He chose not to share his total allotment with CBC News citing privacy concerns, but said the maximum payout under the program is about $284,000. Wightman said he did not qualify for the full amount.

He said he is also eligible for income replacement up to $90,000 per year.

Despite his approval of vaccine injury payout, he says he still doesn't think it matches the physical, emotional and financial toll he's endured over the past year.

"I don't know what number I can say is enough, but [the payout] is not something that I'm overly excited about," he said. "The income replacement won't be what we've been used to ... so that's a little disappointing to me."

I should note I’m being facetious. Imagining if the same logic applied to the vaccine hesitant was applied to this man.

This is hardly news.

Vaccines all have inherent risks, but even the math-challenged understand the concept of a "cost benefit analysis", in that if any given vaccine saves innumerable lives, adverse side effects experienced a a few people will always be a part of that vaccines attached conditions.

Trying to make this a COVID "only" issue is typical of the dishonest tone this thread continually takes.

Regardless, the CDC doesn't ever try to hide these concerns, and indeed they've remained a concern since vaccines were first invented

Sorry to burst your COVID conspiracy bubble:

When you look at traffic enforcement, it's easy to ask why, when the ultimate penalty of reckless driving, drunk driving, texting and driving, etc... is death, people respond better to the threat of a ticket and points than they do the fear of crashing and dying.

It's simple - the concept of receiving and dealing with the fallout of a ticket, fines, points, etc.. is a lot easier to relate to in one's daily life than the possibility of crashing and dying.

I think the same thing applies to vaccine hesitancy - the idea of a vaccine side effect, regardless of how rare, is a lot easier of a concept to visualize and contemplate than the much greater possibility of a COVID infection related death or long-term or permanent disability.  You can see the vaccine.  You sit there for the injection.  You take the bandage off a day later and massage your arm a bit.  Maybe feel sick for a couple of days.  It's tangible. In the eyes of the hesitant, the risk from it is higher than that of something they can't see.

Yes super sad...   Guillain-Barré syndrome: Symptoms, causes, diagnosis, and treatment (medicalnewstoday.com)

In July 2021, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that there may be an increased risk of developing GBS in the 42 daysTrusted Source after a Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine. This has been administered under emergency use authorization from the FDA.

However, instances of GBS following this vaccine are rare. By July 12, healthcare staff had administered approximately 12.5 millionTrusted Source doses of the vaccine, and there were reports of about 100 cases of GBS.

There may be a historical link between vaccination and GBS. In 1976, there was a small increaseTrusted Source in the risk of developing GBS following a vaccination against swine flu. However, the increase was by just 1 case per 100,000.

Experts have looked at a possible link between GBS and flu vaccines, but the results have varied. At most, there may be 1–2 more casesTrusted Source of GBS than usual per million doses of these vaccines, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC adds that the risk of developing GBS after a case of the flu is probably higher than the risk of it following the vaccination.

WestJet CEO calls for end to vaccine mandates as COVID-19 border restrictions extended for another month
The Canadian Airports Council (CAC) has also expressed similar concerns as it blames pandemic measures on massive customs delays across the country and insufficient staff.

She is being gracious with her intro.... But I am grateful for the added voice of dissent coming from those who are not disgraced by the state media.

In summary...Enough with the BS and let's get back to having fun, making money, and being a community. Summer season is coming fast and it's urgent to stop now. We are the only country doing this.... .

At a news conference in Ottawa, representatives from the Canadian Travel and Tourism Roundtable call on the federal government to end COVID-19 border measures at Canada’s border crossings by June 15. Taking part in the news conference are Susie Grynol (president and CEO of the Hotel Association of Canada), Monette Pasher (interim president and CEO of the Canadian Airports Council), Suzanne Acton-Gervais (interim president and CEO of the National Airlines Association of Canada), and Patrick Doyle (vice-president and general manager of American Express Global Business Travel).

You've listed a group of people who are saying "let's drop all the COVID restrictions so we can return to making obscene amounts of money off consumers"

Certainly the concept of forgoing medical, humanitarian or societal concerns in order to maximize company profits isn't new ... and isn't surprising here.

They want the very last restrictions dropped affecting them. Travel is kind of a big deal.

Medical authoritarianism you mean.  Forcing people to choose their job or an experimental medical procedure for billion in profits is the opposite of humanitarian.

Your personal interpretation of what has happened, and what is continuing to happen is factually flawed.

The severity of those flaws is profound, rendering all of your comments easily dismissed by any rational, thinking Canadian.

Of course, being that you do indeed live in Canada, you remain completely free to espouse any nonsensical theory or claim you wish to espouse ... which I'm thoroughly convinced you'll indeed continue to do.

This language always puzzled me.  It's framed in such a way to conjure up visuals of going under the knife to have a pig heart implanted.

One could also state that acquiring a SARS-COV-2 infection is also an experimental medical procedure, in that how it will affect the host is largely a gamble with consequences ranging from cold-like symptoms to death.  Your gamble with catching COVID is far more risky than getting immunized.

Thank you Africa!

GENEVA (Reuters) - African countries raised an objection on Tuesday to a U.S.-led proposal to reform the International Health Regulations (IHR), a move delegates say might prevent passage at the World Health Organization's annual assembly.

The IHR set out WHO members' legally binding obligations around outbreaks. The United States has proposed 13 IHR reforms which seek to authorise the deployment of expert teams to contamination sites and the creation of a new compliance committee to monitor implementation of the rules.

What is this WHO treaty you say?

A glance at the report of the member states snappily titled ‘Working Group on Strengthening WHO Preparedness and Response to Health Emergencies’.

It ominously talks about “structural solutions to promote a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to pandemic prevention, preparedness and response”, which sounds like building the capability for totalitarian rule. It also seeks “national and global co-ordinated actions to address the misinformation, disinformation and stigmatisation that undermine public health”.

While it is true misinformation is dangerous and even deadly, the notion of putting governments in charge of deciding what is and isn’t true is laughable. Witness our own government’s attempts to justify banning open-toed shoes, cigarettes and can openers during the initial pandemic response.

With a treaty that makes the government responsible for policing misinformation, it wouldn’t have been possible for anyone to criticise the government’s response, or dispute the scientific basis of government decisions.

They aren't completely against it just that everything should be changed at the same time...  Sometimes I think you just see someone against something and you just cheer for the sake of the against, not what the actual issue is.

But the African group expressed reservations about even this narrow change, saying all reforms should be tackled together as part of a "holistic package" at a later stage.
